Terence Coyle Obituary

Terence Coyle, American Realist, died on April 6, 2020 after a brief bout with Co-Vid-19 in New York City. A master painter of Oil, Watercolor and printmaker, he loved painting his environs and the people within.

He was born in Williamstown, MA and also raised in Vermont where he became an avid skier. His parents were Ted and Leona Eichelser Coyle. They felt impelled to send their rebellious teen-ager to live with his Aunt Marie Eichelsor who was secretary to Dr. Abraham Flexner, director of the National Institute of Advanced Studies in Princeton, NJ. There he met Albert Einstein and other science luminaries.

After he graduated from Princeton High School, because of World War II, he joined the US Army Air Force in 1944. In 1945, he flew one mission in a B24 Liberator Bomber as tail gunner over Salzbutg, Austria, targeting the rail yards. He told of when he was in the sky, he saw hundreds of black dots over them. They were the RAF planes on their way to bomb Berchtesgade, Hitler's hideout.

He then migrated to New York City and attended Columbia University and the Art Students League of NY. It was at the League that he committed to paint for the rest of his life. His studios included one at Carnegie Hall for many years, and later, a studio on Union Square. He also worked in his studio near his country home in Great Barrington, MA. His countryside landscapes were mostly plein-air paintings.

For 37 years, he was an instructor at the Art Students League of NY,, wherein, he held Master Classes in oil, watercolor painting and artistic anatomy and also lectured at the National Academy of Art and Design. In the 1980's, he co-authored with Robert Beverly Hale two best-selling books on Figure Drawing. His affable manner and his fierce dedication to Art endeared him to his students. He maintained that no matter which style artists may choose to express themselves, it is imperative to learn the knowledge of drawing the human figure and to always apply the Basic Principles and Elements of Design.,

His paintings and drawings are in American M museums and have been at Sothebys and Christies. His works are also in many notable private collections including those of: Thyssen-Bornemisza, Ms. Helen Hayes, former first lady of the of the American Theater, Dr. and Mrs. Howard and Yolanda Freeze and Mr. and Mrs. Richard and Patricia Wecker.

He is survived in loving memory by his wife, Anne Costello Coyle whom he married in 1975 and by the Costello families and those of his late sisters and brother: Alice Trzcinka, Mary Carlotta and Eugene Coyle.

I just saw a cityscape that reminded me of Terry's wonderful watercolors and I decided to google his name and came to this site. My husband Al and I would like to extend our condolences to Anne. We enjoyed spending time with them and June and Sam Costello. Terry was a charming man as well as talented artist. I enjoyed going through his book a "Retrospective at 80" which we will revisit now.

I only got to know Uncle Terry late in his life, but even then he was vibrant, energetic, and full of joie de vie. What really struck me, however, was the obvious and deep love he had for his wife Anne, who was clearly the center of his world.

Terence Coyle, my Uncle Terry, offered an example of what it is to live a life ever curious and attentive to your craft. And while much of his waking life was devoted to making art, for me I will remember his love for my Aunt Anne, his love for all of his family, his hearty laughter and smile, and the light that shone from him- always.

Mr Coyle deepened my understanding of the drawing of the figure. More importantly Mr Coyle freed me to make mistakes and to try and try again to accurately draw aportraits.

During Mr Coyle's Critques one always learned and laughed.

I am sure I will never again have a teacher as generous with his wisdom and his drawing tools as Terence Coyle.

With much fondness and love,

Even in his 90s, Terry emanated such warmth. I remember his beautiful singing voice and mischievous smile and I often refer to his very helpful notes in the margins of his art books. I feel so lucky to have met Terry and greatly enjoyed the times I spent with him.

Was so sorry to hear of Terry's demise. I only met him when he was in his 80's and I agreed to let him put one of his artworks in a NJ auction house where i was the art director and happily it easily sold. I had met his wife when she ran a gallery near where i live. Terry was a sweetheart with old fashioned manners and he and Anne were a pleasure to know as a loving couple after so many years together. I used be in awe as I silently followed them holding hands as they strolled in our neighborhood...so adorable! He will be missed I am sure by all his students, friends, family and 72nd street neighbors!

Uncle Terry was a brilliant painter, a generous man and a wonderful soul. I feel fortunate to have known his warmth, humor and sensitivity. I still see him opening the bottle of champagne at family gatherings with his certain joie de vivre. We miss him dearly!

I arrived at the League in 1972, when I was 18 - newly graduated from high school - and studied there until 1976. I met Terry through a friend of his named Mark, also a painter, and hung out with them many times during those years. Terry had a wonderful sense of humor and was very kind to me. I enjoyed being around him! I’m glad he had a long life , but sad that it ended due to COVID-19!
