Max Hulse Obituary

SAN ANGELO Max Hulse, confident that God causes all things for His ultimate glory, went to be with his Lord and Savior on May 20, 2011. Max was a devoted husband, beloved daddy, proud grandfather and great-grandfather and a faithful friend.

Max was born in Hollis, Oklahoma on August 24, 1931. He grew up in Littlefield, Texas and graduated from the University of North Texas. Max had a successful fifty year career in the brokerage business, most of which was spent with Principal/EGT. As West Texas Regional Manager, he opened offices for the firm in Odessa, Midland, Abilene and Lubbock. Max was then promoted to Assistant General Sales Manager of Principal/EGT and transferred to Dallas. His desire to return to West Texas prompted a move to San Angelo, where he opened and staffed the San Angelo office of EGT in 1974. He subsequently was elected Senior Vice President and appointed to the Board of Directors.

Max also had a second career in the art business. In the mid-60's, he began collecting art for its aesthetic as well as investment value. From there, he opened the Texas Art Gallery in Dallas. Through the influence of his wife, Sandra, who is an accomplished artist, he then began painting. He was motivated by creating something beautiful and sharing that enjoyment with others. Max opened Concho Art Gallery in the Cactus Hotel, where he sold his original paintings. He has won various awards and accolades for his work.

Max participated actively in many civic, church and professional activities. Organizations include Boys Club, YMCA, Fort Concho Foundation, United Way, San Angelo Fine Arts Museum, Goals for San Angelo, The Heart Fund, Samaritan Counseling Center, San Angelo Country Club and the Chamber of Commerce.

He also became involved with The Communities Foundation of Texas and served on the Advisory Board. He was instrumental in establishing the San Angelo Area Fund of the Communities Foundation of Texas and served as chairman of the Advisory Council. He has served as a board member of the Texas Council on Economic Education and was on the Advisory Board of Howard College Foundation. Max has served as president of the San Angelo Cultural Affairs Council. He also served as chairman of the San Angelo Arts Council. Max was active in Bill Glass Prison Ministries. He organized and was president of the steering committee for the National Prayer Breakfast of San Angelo.

Max was preceded in death by his parents, Lorene and Dewey Hulse and son-in-law, Dan Novak.

Max is survived by his wife, Sandra Freeze Hulse; his three daughters, Cheryl & Ron Murff, Kim & Kirk Davis and Kristi Novak; eight grandchildren, Amy Murff Perry, Aaron Murff, Chase, Caroline and Blake Davis, Casey, Courtney and Cody Novak; and three great-granddaughters, all of Dallas; two sisters, Glenda Pope of Lubbock and Karlyn Fedora of College Station and their families.

Others survivors include three step-children, Barton Gunter of Dallas, Elizabeth Gunter Steving and Sloan Gunter of Fredricksburg and their families.

Max had a tremendous zest for life. His enthusiasm was contagious, as evidenced by the numerous friendships he cultivated over his lifetime. He was an accomplished musician, artist, golfer and pilot. Max truly lived life to the fullest. He was a man of deep faith and integrity. Max had no fear in death because of the unshakeable confidence he had in his Lord.

A memorial service will be held on Tuesday, May 24 at 1:00pm at Glen Meadows Baptist Church, 6002 Knickerbocker Road, San Angelo, TX 76904.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to:

Cheryl, Kim, and Kristi - I was so saddened to hear of your loss. I had the distinct pleasure of being around Max a few times and I loved his zest for life - and the way he loved the three of you. Wayne and I will keep you and your families in our thoughts and prayers - knowing that God has welcomed Max with open and loving arms! I love you three as if you were my very own sisters and am so blessed for that!

Dearest Sandra, Kristi and the family of our beloved Max, Words are inadequate to express how much we loved Max and how he touched our lives in countless ways. He will remain in our hearts and memories until we meet again. We can almost hear him playing his harmonica in the Heavenly choir. We are honored to have been included in his long list of friends. May the Holy Spirit, the Comforter, envelop you in His loving arms and give you the "peace that passes understanding". Our love, Joan & R.B. Tanner and Janet & John Gordon

My brother and I went through school with Max, starting with the first grade. He was a very nice classmate for 11 years. We doubled grades in the 5th and 6th grades, so we went only 11 years. Sue (powell) and John Henry Powell. Sorry to hear of his death.

I did not know Mr. Hulse personally but have the pleasure of enjoying his painting of Howard Payne University's beloved "Old Main" in my office each day which I believe he gifted to the university in 2003. It is a beautiful painting and evokes so many wonderful memories from other HPU alumni that visit the Advancement offices. May you all be comforted by your many wonderful memories with this great man and know that through his art he has touched and will continue to touch the lives of many, many people. May God bless and comfort you during this time and always.

Max Hulse was a very special guy. He never met a stranger(for long). I met Max a little over a year ago and had lunch with him on average of once a week since then. I was amazed with his generosity and who he knew.Max was a Renascence Man. Not only was he accomplished as an investment advisor, he was a very respected painter and musician - but he was a GREAT GUY!
Max will be missed!
