Eugenia (Jeanne) E. Calle died suddenly on Tuesday, February 17, 2009 in Atlanta, Georgia at the age of 57.
Jeanne was born and raised in Akron, Ohio. She completed her undergraduate work in Medical Communications and later received her MS and PhD in Epidemiology from Ohio State University.
She worked as an epidemiologist at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory in the area of cancer risk assessment before relocating to Atlanta in 1984 to work at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention on the Agent Orange Projects. Jeanne joined the American Cancer Society (ACS) in 1989, and during her 20 years of service, she contributed to groundbreaking research on the causes and prevention of cancer. Her legacy includes two landmark studies on the relation of obesity to cancer, important contributions to understanding the risk factors for breast and ovarian cancers in women, and research on hormone-replacement therapy in relation to female cancers. She was also instrumental in developing the Society's Cancer Prevention Studies into major resources for groundbreaking research on air pollution, nutrition, physical activity, medications, and inherited susceptibility genes. She served as a member of the National Cancer Institute's Board of Scientific Counselors, the American Epidemiological Society, as an adjunct Professor of Epidemiology at the Rollins School of Public Health, Emory University, and on the editorial boards of several prominent cancer journals. Before her retirement just two weeks ago, Jeanne most recently served as the Vice President of Epidemiology at the ACS's National Home Office.
Jeanne brought a formidable intellect and passion to her work as well as to her life outside of work. She loved to travel and enjoyed documenting her trips through her photography. Jeanne lived her life to the fullest, and was blessed to be surrounded by a wide circle of friends, who, along with her family, will miss her dearly.
Preceded in death by her husband, Richard Letz; father, James Calle; brother, Christopher Calle; and niece, Marisa Ley; Jeanne is survived by her fiancé, Charles Beaudrot; mother, Theodora Calle; sister, Cindy Calle Ley; brother-in-law, Darryl Ley; nieces, Alexis Calle, Mari and Melina Ley; nephews, Matt and Michael Ley; many aunts, uncles, cousins, and her dog Nikki.
A memorial service and reception will be held Tuesday, February 24, 2009 in Atlanta.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the "Eugenia Calle Memorial Fund for Epidemiology Research" at the American Cancer Society. Checks should be sent to the ACS National Home Office, 250 Williams Street, NW, Atlanta, GA 30303-1002 with a note indicating that it is for this fund.

To Jeanne's family,
Our annual Christmas card to Jeanne returned today because it was "not deliverable". Trying to find out why, we googled and discovered what had happened to her.
We are deeply shocked and saddened .
Rick, our long-time Boston friend and collegue, and Jeanne visited us half a year before Rick died.
It was the first time we met Jeanne in person. We spent two very happy days together. Through her warmth, kindness and deep personal interest it felt as though we had known Jeanne all our lives. And that's how we will remember her.
We offer you our sincere condolonces.

From overseas to Jeanne's family - We just tried to send a Thanksgiving message to Jeanne. Not having her email address handy, I started to google and found out. Though we did not maintain verry frequent contacts, on occasions like this we'd be in touch. We are shocked. The two of us remember with fondness the kind, energetic and warm person Jeanne was. We'd come to know her well as our long-time friend from Boston Rick Letz, Jeanne's late husband, became ill. We cherish some very special memories of their stay with us, and of my later visit to Atlanta a few months before he passed away. Jeanne will stay in our hearts as a very good friend. We send you our belated condolences, hoping this will not make this special day more difficult for you.

To Jeanne's family - My husband Josh and I are now the lucky owners of Jeanne's old house on Virginia Avenue. From the minute we met Jeanne, we were amazed by her warmth and generosity. She made us feel right at home in what is now our home. There will always be a wonderful history and piece of Jeanne in our home for years to come. Every night, we enjoy the amazing kitchen that she designed and built while she lived here. It is now a source of love and comfort in our home - Thanks to Jeanne. We know Jeanne's incredible spirit will carry on in so many ways. Our love, Kim & Josh Gnatt

To Jeanne's family--I was one of Jeanne's college roommates. We shared a room with two others, Betsy Beebe and Eileen Enabnit, in Taylor Tower at Ohio State. My friendship was rekindled years later when Jeanne had the lead article in the New England Journal of Medicine. I was very proud of the significant research that she had accomplished, and the recognition that she was receiving. I am a practicing obstetrician/gynecologist in California. I send my condolences to you. I hope that you are healing after this sudden, sad loss of Jeanne. Love to you, Nancy E. Mason, M.D.

Jeanne was my God Sister and from early childhood she was my idol. It doesn't seem fair to have such a brilliant full of life woman be taken so tragically. I remember the giggles, overnight stays on weekends watching scarey movies late at night, picking blackberries, family vacations. The memories are flooding upon me. I always expected to have Jeanne around when we were old. I am so proud of Jeanne and what she accomplished in her life. She is definately in Heaven watching out for all of us. My deepest sympathy to my Nona, Cindy and her family, Chuck and all her friends and colleagues. Thank you Chuck for making her happy! God Bless You. Jeanne will always be my idol.

I was a first year teacher at Copley Junior High School and had the privilege of having Jeanne in my seventh grade honors language arts class. She was in a class with many bright, highly motivated students.
Even though I was their teacher, I learned a great deal from them.I thought about that class over the years and even though it has been almost 45 years since I taught that class, I always felt that each of them would be successful in life and would contribute to the betterment of our society. Jeanne will be remembered as she was very bright and a class leader. I was so proud to hear of her accomplishments but saddened to hear of her tragic death.
My God bring her family comfort during this time of sorrow.

My prayers are with the Calle family. Both Rick and Jeanne were my colleagues when I served on the faculty at Emory University School of Public Health. They were beautiful people. I had gone to their home for holiday parties, when Rick served as the chair of my department. This world will never be the same without them. I pray for peace in our city, nation and the world.

Dear Mrs Calle, Chuck, and family: Please accept my deepest sympathies and prayers. Jeanne combined her skills, knowledge, professionalism and research to help many. Whether speaking to colleagues or laymen, she could easily explain her research findings in ways her audience could understand. Her expectations led others to remain focused and produce more work. She is with you now and always. Treasure her memory and know that her research has positively impacted many people across the world in understanding the oncology field. I had the pleasure of working with Jeanne (and Michael Thun) in 1993-94 at ACS on CPSI and CPSII. I recall her fondly. She loved her work, friends and family. May God comfort you.

To my dearest family, some things I'd like to say...
but first of all, to let you know, that I arrived okay.
I'm writing this from heaven. Here I dwell with God above.
Here, there's no more tears of sadness; here is just eternal love.
Please do not be unhappy just because I'm out of sight.
Remember that I'm with you every morning, noon and night.
That day I had to leave you when my life on earth was through,
God picked me up and hugged me and He said, "I welcome you."
It's good to have you back again; you were missed while you were gone.
As for your dearest family, they'll be here later on.
I need you here badly; you're part of my plan.
There's so much that we have to do, to help our mortal man.
God gave me a list of things, that he wished for me to do.
And foremost on the list, was to watch and care for you.
And when you lie in bed at night, the day's chores put to flight.
God and I are closest to you....in the middle of the night.
When you think of my life on earth, and all those loving years
because you are only human, they are bound to bring you tears.
But do not be afraid to cry; it does relieve the pain.
Remember there would be no flowers, unless there was some rain.
I wish that I could tell you all that God has planned.
But if I were to tell you, you wouldn't understand.
But one thing is for certain, though my life on earth is o'er.
I'm closer to you now, than I ever was before.
There are many rocky roads ahead of you and many hills to climb;
but together we can do it by taking one day at a time.
It was always my philosophy and I'd like it for you too...
that as you give unto the world, the world will give to you.
If you can help somebody who's in sorrow and pain,
then you can say to God at night......"My day was not in vain."
And now I am contented....that my life has been worthwhile,
knowing as I passed along the way, I made somebody smile.
So if you meet somebody who is sad and feeling low,
just lend a hand to pick him up, as on your way you go.
When you're walking down the street, and you've got me on your mind;
I'm walking in your footsteps only half a step behind.
And when it's time for you to go.... from that body to be free,
remember you're not going.....you're coming here to me.

My heart & prayers go out to Jeannie's mother & fiance. To lose someone so gentle and loving is a loss beyond comprehension. I was one of the Fairlawn girls that attended Copley H.S. with Jeannie, and I remember her as an always smiling, VERY INTELLIGENT, fun-loving girl. Our class is in the planning stages for our 40th reunion and it is so hard to believe that one of our own could be taken from us in such a way. Again, my thoughts & prayers go out to her fiance & all her family.

Remember
Remember me when I am gone away,
Gone far away into the silent land;
When you can no more hold me by the hand,
Nor I half turn to go yet turning stay.
Remember me when no more day by day
You tell me of our future that you plann'd:
Only remember me; you understand
It will be late to counsel then or pray.
Yet if you should forget me for a while
And afterwards remember, do not grieve:
For if the darkness and corruption leave
A vestige of the thoughts that once I had,
Better by far you should forget and smile
Than that you should remember and be sad.

Words cannot express the tragedy I feel at Dr. Calle's death. I lived in the Atlanta area, worked for a non-profit and raised my children there. Though now in Pennsylvania, my daughter works for the American Cancer Society in Florida. I morn with you the loss of such a bright light and am thankful for her contributions and passions while she was here on this earth. Reading her accomplishments makes me realize she was the best of the best and so many people were blessed by her time here. God will grant her eternal peace and joy until the kingdom comes and we are all re-united.

We met Jeanne soon after she moved to Atlanta and were good friends when she married her late husband, Emory Professor Rick Letz. They had a great life with their dogs and traveled widely. Jeanne was lively, witty, and fun to be around. Not only was she a brilliant research scientist, but she had exquisite taste and her homes were always magazine-lovely. Her life wasn't perfect -- she had recently experienced the deaths of family members, a husband and close friends -- but she was looking forward to continuing a productive career in consulting after her retirement and enjoying her new love.
It's hard to accept that the life of someone so friendly and kind could be cut off so suddenly. Our hearts go out to Chuck and her family as we share this loss with her many friends and colleagues.

Jeanne was one of a kind, and she will be sorely missed. Jeanne was caring, brillant, and funny. I still consider our "girl's only" vacation to Hunting Island the best trip ever! I knew Dr. Calle from morning hellos in the breakroom as we passed each other here at the American Cancer Society. We could have spoken more if I'd known she was from my hometown. We all are praying for comfort for The Family in the hard days ahead, and all of you should take great pride in knowing that her contributions have greatly enhanced all of our lives forever.

I am truly sadden to hear about the death of Ms. Calle. I did not know her personally, however I did have a casual conversation with her while riding the elevator at the Aqua condos. Her spirit was warm and caring. I am not surprised that she dedicated her life to helping others. My deepest sympathy goes out to her family and friends.

I am shocked and saddened to learn of Jeanne's suddent, violent death. I have known Jeanne since 1979, when we met in a singles club in Oak Ridge, TN. I will always remember her wonderful sense of humor and the openness about herself she shared with friends. Jeanne maintained contact with many of her friends in the Oak Ridge area years after she moved to Atlanta, and I loved to see her interviewed about her research findings every now and then on national TV. Jeanne was a loyal friend and had a beautiful zest for life. She made this world a better place and it's difficult to accept the fact that she is no longer part of it.

My heartfelt condolences to the Calle family. I did not know her, but it breaks my heart that someone that lived their life helping others had hers taken away so tragically.
