George Cabaniss Obituary

George Alan Cabaniss died Friday, July 17th of colon cancer, first diagnosed in 2014. Born in Decatur, Illinois on August 15th, 1956, he grew up in Silver Lake, Ohio, the son of George and Margaret Cabaniss. George leaves behind a multitude of good friends, including several friendships lasting decades. Dan, Dale, Gary, Kal, Scotty, Butch, Rabbit (Mary), John, Patti, Frank, Chuck, Tom, first wife, Becky, Tren, Carol, Rocky, Sherry, Bob, Hammer, and Don, his friend and former wife Janice Gray, and close friend, Ann Crock, are just a few of them. The family wishes to apologize for any omission; George was very blessed. He was so thankful for the many devoted friends who supported him throughout his illness and made it possible for him to remain at home during his final months. He leaves behind two siblings, sister, Anne of New Albany, IN and brother, Kevin (Crissy) of St. Louis, MO; four nieces and nephews, all from California: Meredith, Mark, Colette and Johnny. He was preceded in death by his brother, Mark who passed away last year, his parents and grandparents. George was a notable and talented guitar player from his teens, known throughout the NE Ohio region for his distinctive style. George's musicality was well appreciated, not only locally, but by aficionados coast to coast, as well as in the UK, EU and Japan. Besides being a guitarist of great skill, he also worked tirelessly to compose clever pop and rock songs for both male and female singers, words and music that you wished you had written yourself. His guitar solos had an adventurous style, well crafted and executed with bursts of jaw-dropping flash, passion, and always superb tone, vibrato and feel. He loved electric guitars and amps and how they worked together, continually searching for the perfect combinations of sound, response and playability, whether from vintage or brand-new instruments. But George sounded like George, no matter what he played! Every town has a guitar player that every other guitar player in town respects, and he was Akron's for over four decades. George was in the following bands over the past 40+ years: Kil Cooley, Yankee, Hammer Damage, Dead Boys, Stiv Bators Band, Sodbusters, Color Me Gone, Village Idiots, Bad Dudes, Paper Crowns, Orange Ruffians and the Psyclones. There will be a memorial gathering sometime during the summer of 2021 at Virginia Kendall Park. Honor George's life by being kind and nurturing to all living things, from the tiny gnat to the bull elephant. The family extends our deepest gratitude to Chris, Rene, Mona Lisa and Yvonne from Summa Hospice. Memorial gifts can be donated to the charity of your choice.

On reading Mike Fred's newest post, it occurs to me that I spent a lot of time in Silver Lake as a child even though I lived in Akron. My step dad lived in Silver Lake. I probably met George before I thought that I had, with friends at the Annual Silver Lake Street Fair every summer, or with my friends around the neighborhood when I was there. We were the exact same age. But I really knew George later from Hammer Damage, and I also just loved THE MUNSTER'S theme!

I still think about you! I will forever cherish the short time I was in Kil Kooley with you. The music was not my style but the chance for us to finally get to play together outweighed that and I was thankful for the challenge and your patience with me. You made me a better guitarist! I will never forget when you invited me out to Filthy McNastys yo see the new band you were with and when I walked in you were playing a punk version of THE MUNSTERS theme. Brilliant! Miss you!

George,
I still remember, at that very last guitar show that you attended, how you agreed that we should get together someday to make some noise. Sometimes someday isn't soon enough. Much regret for not making it happen.
Peace eternal,
Bob Cesare

George, you must still be around, somewhere. Just a while back, my wife and I were driving around and out of nowhere, we started wondering how Janice was doing and all that you went through. A few days later, we realized it was on the 17th of July. Yep, you're still here. The guitar show is coming up, where we last spoke. I'll be there for ya.
Peace,
Bob & Pat

Our deepest condolences go out to George's family and to our old neighbor, Janice, who was there until his last heartbeat. We had a nice chat at Akron's last Summit County guitar show. Wish we could have worked together. Rest in peace, George.

George was a very fun brother to have. If we were out driving around in southern Indiana late at night and went over an old bridge he would predictably say to me: “ Weight limit 4 tons Anne, you had better get out!” I will miss his wit, his unique take on life, and his insistence on being good and nice and loving to everyone.

So sad to hear of George’s passing. A great guitarist, but always humble, and appreciative of other musicians. He had the drive and persistence it took to turn his talent into something special. I remember being at his house back in the 1970s while he spent 45 minutes working on his vibrato technique, and realized that he put that sort of effort into his playing all the time. Despite his illness, he always seemed positive, and always concerned about others. And, of course, he kept playing. Sincere condolences to all his friends and family. I will be listening to a few of his old recordings tonight, and shedding a tear. Peace, George.

My “partner” in “crime” and fellow Bad Dude for 28 yrs...met him in 77-8 and was fortunate to have played with him in Sodbusters..Hammer Damage...Village Idiots and Bad Dudes...one of the best guitar players ever!...so many stories I can’t begin but our drive from California to Ohio and breaking down in Wyoming for a few days was a hoot!...was like a brother to me and I miss you very much...

I first met George through my brother John who was running sound for Hammer Damage at the time. He said "You have got to see these guys! They're punks but their guitar player burns." So I checked them out and my life was changed. Just like that I was a huge fan. I met so many great people through that band but George was the greatest. His guitar playing was out of this world but he was incredibly humble about it. Later on he got into software and he helped me with several issues. He was also one of the funniest people but again humble and low key, not calling attention to himself but pointing out the humor in a situation. He fought like a champion against Cancer and never let it sap him of his spirit. I'll miss him the rest of my days. God speed George.

George was a good friend that I never got to see for a long time. I didn't know him outside of playing gigs and band stuff, but when I would bump into him, it was like no time had passed. He was smart, funny, good looking and always looked like a Rock Star on stage. RIP, Georgie! You were a good dude.

I chose "friend" for my relationship, and he was a "dear friend" for 42 years, but speaking for all his former bandmates, we loved him like a "brother"! The photo is from his last birthday, the night before he steadfastly played with 6 or 7 of his former bands. Weak from years of treatments, but at the end of the night he was still rockin', standing up in mockery of the barstool we'd placed for possible respite! A fighter, a gentlemen, a musician's musician and always in for a laugh... aloha óe, you are missed, comrade!

So sorry to hear of George's death. I knew him in High School and we compared notes on all things guitar and music many times. Played very briefly with him in a band (Kil Cooley) and we jammed a few times before that. ALWAYS a nice guy with no ego and always had a smile and played the frets off his guitar. I highly respected his musicality (as did many others). I will miss you my friend........................................

George was a dear dear friend. So hard to think I won't see him again in this life. That just hurts. Really bad. If you knew him as a musician you are certainly blessed. Best guitar player I ever knew, from incendiary rock solos to subtle and sophisticated sweet chord progressions and everything in between, Wonderful songwriter, untouchable as a stage presence. But if you knew him as a person you were doubly blessed! So smart, so funny, so kind. Truly one of a kind. The world is a dimmer place without his presence.
