Nancy Cabaniss Obituary
December 17, 1947 - August 29, 2025
Nancy Ann Tate Cabaniss, 77, of Ruther Glen, passed away August 29, 2025, after a lengthy illness.
Nancy was an avid animal lover and worked tirelessly to rescue and find homes for an untold number of dogs and cats in her lifetime. She owned and operated Dogpatch, a boarding kennel, for 30-plus years. She served as a member of the Ladysmith Volunteer Rescue Squad, the Caroline County Agricultural Fair Association, the Humane Society of Caroline County, and she heartily supported the Virginia German Shepherd Rescue. Her work life included careers in general contracting, property inspection for Caroline County, and as a "driver of the stars" with a movie production company, working on many films produced in the Commonwealth of Virginia. She loved the outdoors and much preferred yard work over housework. She took great pride in maintaining the Tate Farmhouse, where she was born and raised.
Nancy is survived by her husband, David Cabaniss, Sr.; her siblings, Buster, Kenny (Debbie), Susan, Herbert and Lynda Jo; the one whom she loved like a son, Jerry "Bud" Abel, Jr., his wife, Niki, and their children, J.R., Colton and Savannah; her beloved German Shepherds, Nicky and Ozzie; and generations of nieces, nephews, cousins and cherished friends.
A celebration of Nancy's life will be held Friday, September 12, at 2 p.m. at Carmel Baptist Church in Ruther Glen. The family will receive friends at the church one hour prior to the service.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Caroline County Agricultural Fair Association, P. O. Box 1207, Ruther Glen, VA 22546, or to an animal rescue of your choice.
