Raymond Packard Obituary

Raymond Dean Packard passed away peacefully in Akron, 7-12-20. Born in Ankeny, Iowa on 3-12-33, he was a Navy veteran (Korean War), graduate of Grinnell College and Drake University (MFA). An accomplished teacher and artist, Ray launched The Packard Gallery in the 1960s, which became Akron's counterpart to Warhol's "Factory," - a hub of cutting-edge art and music. He was once voted "Akron's Most Eligible Bachelor." Ray followed with studios in Venice, California and a twenty-year Artist in Residence on the Venice boardwalk. Ray was endeared to all who met him, and died as a man in long-term addiction recovery. He is survived by wife, Bunny; sons, Vincent, Raynard, and Damon; stepkids, Don, Joan, and Miranda; grandchildren, Corey, Sonja, and Magdalena; and great-granddaughter, Lzzy. In lieu of a service, a seventy-year retrospective of Ray's work will stream at facebook.com/thepackardinstitute

I taught art to two of Ray´s sons many years ago at Rankin Elementary in Akron. I just learned of Ray´s passing. My best to the boys - sincere condolences.

So sad to learn of Ray's passing. He was a good friend for years who we saw often when we lived in Venice and later when we moved to Malibu. He may have been the kindest man I ever knew. Ray and a current girlfriend attended our wedding in Santa Monica in 1985 and we regularly got together with him until we moved to Alaska. We are reminded of Ray every day by the 12 Packard watercolors that adorn our walls. RIP, Ray.

My sincere condolences. Ray readily accepted me into the family, and made me feel at home on the few visits Jack and I made to Akron. I enjoyed meeting and talking with him and regret not getting to know him better. We treasure the painting Ray gifted us. It is a dear and tangible memory of him.

Very sorry to hear this news. The phrase, "one of a kind" could have been created for Ray. Had plenty of fun with Ray back in the 60's. Great memories of art, music, theater, dance and parties. Sending my deepest condolences to the family and all of Ray's many friends from over the years.
