Mary Seavey Obituary

Mary Ann Melzer Seavery died February 16, 2016, surrounded by her loving family, from complications of Alzheimer's disease. Born March 29, 1929, in Methuen, Massachusetts, Mary Ann was the only child of the late Henry and Mildred Melzer of Belmont, MA. A 1946 graduate of Belmont High School, Mary Ann attended the Mary Burnham preparatory school and then embarked on a career in nursing. She was always so proud to claim as her alma mater, the Massachusetts General Hospital School of Nursing. After graduation, Mary Ann and dear friend, Carolyn Kilmer Trotter, moved to Atlanta. While working in the Emory Hospital emergency room Mary Ann met her future husband, the late Paul W. Seavey, M.D. The Seaveys and their three daughters settled in Durham, NC, for ten years before returning to Atlanta in 1967. Mary Ann was active in the Emory Hospital Auxiliary and served as president. She was a longtime member of the Emory University Woman's Club and Druid Hills Golf Club. She was an avid reader, bridge player and enjoyed the craft of needlepoint. Summer vacations in Maine were a family tradition for many years and Amelia Island became a second home later in life. Paul and Mary Ann celebrated 52 years of marriage before his death in 2004.

Mary Ann is survived by her three daughters and their families: Cheryl & Fred Murphy, Carol & Randan Ashmore, and Susan & Steve Forte.

Her grandchildren, Susie (David) Reynolds and David Murphy, Stephanie (John) Streer, Joe Yeatts, Patricia Yeatts (Andy Butcher) and their father, Steve Yeatts, Christina (Shea) Meddin, Michael Forte (Frances Parker).

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, February 20 at 2:00 p.m. at St. Bede's Episcopal Church, 2601 Henderson Mill Rd, NE, Atlanta, GA 30345. www.stbedes.org.

I loved being with Mrs. Seavey when Susan and I were young. I've told Susan how grateful I was to have her mom take me to Athens to the University of Georgia for my very first move-in. I can't recall how it happened that she was the one, but I do remember that she was sweet to do it! And she raised a beautiful family, three women who have gone on to raise beautiful families as well. Now, that's a legacy. Eternal rest grant unto her O Lord.

Carol, sorry to read of your mom's passing in the paper this morning. She was a sweet mom and raised three beautiful daughters. My mom also passed from Alzheimer's on Jan. 10. We were both blessed to be raised in good families with loving parents. God bless you and your sisters
