Myrna Rowland Obituary

Myrna Mathis Rowland died Wednesday, December 2, 2020, at NHC of Charleston. She was preceded in death by her parents, William Arthur Mathis and Jeanne Lyons Mathis and her former husband Charles Alden Rowland IV of Athens, Georgia.

She is survived by her sister, Sylvia Mathis Gibson, widow of the late Robert Edward Gibson of Athens, Georgia; her son, William Mathis Rowland and his wife Lourdes; her daughter, Eleanor Price Wright; and her four granddaughters; Pilar Rowland and Eleanor, Abigail and Amelia Wright of Charleston, South Carolina.

Myrna graduated from the University of Georgia in 1963 with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Sculpture and moved to Charleston in 1973.

She was a talented artist and ran her own business, Pieces of Me, by Myrna, specializing in custom jewelry-making, sculpture, and restoration of art objects and artifacts.

For years, Myrna volunteered at the Charleston Museum and was also an amateur archaeologist and Charleston privy digger. She later participated in excavations in Israel, St. Eustatius, and also an underwater shipwreck in Michigan.

Myrna was president of the Archaeological Society of Charleston for many years and twice received a Special Service award from the Archaeological Institute of South Carolina.

She also saw herself as an adventurer and travelled to many countries including Europe, Russia and China, which she especially loved.

Myrna was very proud of her flower garden and earned her Master Gardener certificate from the Clemson University Extension in Charleston, South Carolina.
