Samuel Southwell Whittemore Jr.

Jr., Samuel Southwell Whittemore 82 Aug. 08, 1932 Feb. 06, 2015 Sam passed away peacefully Friday, Feb. 6, 2015, at home. Sam was born Aug. 8, 1932, in Spokane, to Estelle Pickrell and Samuel Southwell Whittemore. Growing up in Spokane, he attended Wilson grade school and Lewis and Clark High School. He graduated from Whitman College where he was an active member of the Phi Delta Theta Fraternity. At Whitman, he also met his wife of 59 years, Molly Ireland. Sam was drafted into the U.S. Army in 1954, and was stationed in Idar-Oberstein, Germany. On Dec. 24, 1955, Sam and Molly were married in Germany, where they lived for eight months. Returning to the states, he began his career as a stockbroker with Dean Whittier in San Francisco. He returned to Portland in April 1956, and continued his career as a successful stockbroker until he retired from Piper Jaffray in 1994. Sam was an avid golfer and as a member of Waverley Country Club, he enjoyed many wonderful events with family and friends. In addition to Sam's professional accomplishments, hobbies and family life, he was devoted to several philanthropic organizations, including Loaves and Fishes, United Good Neighbors and The Delaunay Institute. His dedication to Loaves and Fishes in particular, led him to a longtime volunteer job delivering food through its Meals-on-Wheels program. Sam is survived by his wife, Molly of Portland; children, Scott Whittemore (Chiaki) of Mill Valley, Calif., and Jill Williamson (Jack) of West Linn; grandchildren, Hannah and Sam Whittemore and Bridget and Hillary Murrieta; brother, James Whittemore (Simone) of Washington, D.C.; nephew, Pieter Whittemore (Lori) and family; niece, Lauren Whittemore (Geneanne); and sister-in-law, Martha Ireland of Portland. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, March 2, 2015, at Christ Church in Lake Oswego. In lieu of flowers, Sam would ask that you consider a donation to Loaves and Fishes or a charity of your choice.
