A graduate of Hillsboro Union High School in 1948, he went on to Oregon State College, graduating in 1952. He is survived by his children, Katherine, Sharon (Karen's twin) and Steven. He had 10 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. A memorial service is scheduled at St. Peter's Lutheran Church, 4265 SW Golf Course Rd., Cornelius at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 13, 2012. Not sure what to say?

Here is my dad, Rick, with two of my kids years ago! (Ryan is now 14 years old and Jessilyn is 15.)

I had to get a picture of my dad as a farmer. This is him in his first pickup truck.

I met Rick when he sold me some hay for my sheep back in 2002. Looking back on it, it is amazing that we became friends - he thought cattle were far superior to sheep and I am a registered Democrat! But we had lots in common, including our love of agriculture, and Rick provided me with great farming advice over the years. He could be a gruff man, but he also had a sensitive side that was less apparent. Like that he fed a toothless old barn cat canned food and the story he told me of the heifer that lost her moo during weaning. I shall miss you Rick but I am sure that there are green pastures and good prices for cattle where you are now. And I shall think of you every time I see a contrail up in the sky.

I met Rick when I moved here in 2001 from Solana Beach, California. We got acquainted and discovered that when he was active in the U. S. Marine Reserves at Naval Air Station, Los Alamitos, California, I was active in a Navy Air Transport Squadron there. But, our paths never crossed while completing our reserve obligations. I will certainly miss Rick.

Rick will be missed by all who knew him. We will miss out talks about the cattle industry and which breed was best - black or red. Lunch at Marys is not the same without him.

My mother, Margaret Putnam Hesse, went to high school with Rick and then I got acquainted with him when I would visit St. Peter's when my uncle George was pastor. Rick was always friendly to me and seemed to have a nice sense of humor. I was sorry to hear of his passing.

You are all in our thoughts and prayers. Sometimes he would come down to the beach with Marlene and Tom. He loved the salmon dinners. Treasure all your happy memories.

My Dad had a pretty cool car for awhile. I think he got rid of this car (one of the earliest Corvettes) when he got the Oldsmobile Vista Cruiser stati

I love you all and I know this is a hard time for your family. Uncle Rick never knew who I was. One time he thought I was Frankie's girlfriend (Hahaha). He would always figure it out and say "Debbie's Girl right". I am so grateful for the times we were able to spend as family either at the farm or in California. Such a nice warm man. He will truly be missed.

Rick was always a good neighbor. We traded some work, bought and sold cattle to one another, he cut and baled our hay for many years. I expect he very busy in God's green pastures. We'll miss him as a good friend, Skip and Sue Russell

He was beautifully simple and predictable and perfectly flawed. It's why people related to him. My College friends greatly enjoyed his companionship at Oregon State tailgaters. He wasn't just one of my favorite Uncles, but one of my favorite people to enjoy a meal and a good time with. He will be missed, but not forgotten.
