Dr . G. Brock Magruder Sr.

10/6/1931-1/8/2019George Brock Magruder passed away peacefully on 1/8/2019 in Lake Mary, Florida. He was 87 years old. He is survived by his loving wife, Polly, and his children Brock Magruder Jr (Kathy), Douglas Magruder (Debbie), Bailey Magruder (Shelley), John Magruder, Lura Peck (Bob), Tom Bates (Nathalie), and Bradley Bates (Reiko). He was adored by his sixteen grandchildren.Born and raised in Orlando, he completed his undergraduate studies as well as medical school at Emory University. After an internship at Duke University he finished his Ophthalmology Residency at Cornell University Medical Center in New York City. Dr Magruder served as a Navy Ophthalmologist in Bethesda, Maryland before returning to Orlando to start his practice in 1963. He was tireless in his pursuit to bring the highest quality care to his patients and brought important medical breakthroughs to Central Florida. He performed the first intraocular lens insertion in the area in 1972 and opened the first outpatient surgery center in the 1980's. Dr Magruder served as Chief of Staff at what is now Orlando Health, founded the Magruder Eye Institute, served as President of the Magruder Foundation, was a member of the Rollins Crummer School of Business advisory board, and was active with Lighthouse Central Florida aiding the visually impaired. Dr Magruder's love of sailing and the ocean was passed to all his children and grandchildren. He and Polly also relished hosting family and friends at their historic home in Dorset, Vermont. He leaves behind a devoted family who all appreciate the wisdom, experience and strong values he exhibited as a leader and father.
