Gerda Frisch

FRISCH, Gerda Caroline (nee Hellwig) May 8, 1907 - July 28, 2009 Peacefully, on July 28, aged 102. Predeceased by husband Harald (1970) and son Robert (1985; Juliana). Survived by daughter Anita Galitzine (the late Nicholas) of Victoria, B.C., and son Thomas (Wendy) of Ottawa; grandchildren Alexander Galitzine (Kelly), Marina Classen (Kurt), Peter Galitzine (Suzanne), and Sylvia Frisch (Berwyn); and eleven great- grandchildren. Gerda was born and raised in Riga, Latvia, and married there (1929). She brought her family safely through the upheavals of WWII and after a brief spell in Denmark, settled in London, England. The family emigrated to Canada in 1954. Gerda spoke four languages, was a passionate music-lover, took a keen interest in politics, and was resolutely "old school". Possessed of a will, as well as a constitution, of iron, she was still living independently at home in Old Ottawa South on her 101st birthday. The family wishes to sincerely thank the staff of Extendicare Starwood, Ottawa, for their care and attention during Great Omi's last year of life. Funeral service to be held at St. John's Lutheran Church, 799 Silver Lake Road, Augsburg, near Eganville, Ont., on Friday, August 7 at 11 a.m.
