Leo Yerxa Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Sep. 11, 2017.
Peacefully with his best friend and love, Maxine, by his side.

Survived by Max and her critters, children Martin Yerxa (wife Cathy and son Peter), Johanna Tekawisaritha Lazore and Sean O?Neill, sister Marilyn, brothers William and Wayne and granddaughter Niiohontesha. Predeceased by his mother Frances and father Bert, brother Bob and sisters Florence, Betty, Dorothy and Joyce. He will be remembered by his many nieces, nephews and friends.

Leo was from the Little Eagle reserve near the town of Fort Frances in northern Ontario and was educated at Algonquin College and the University of Waterloo. Leo would say his best education came from our natural world.

For so many over the years, Leo was both a friend and a source of inspiration. Through his gentle, humble manner, and through his unique sense of humour, he taught many about what it means to be a strong, spiritual person. He was an internationally acknowledged artist and writer whose gifts created a bridge between the ways of the native and non-native world. Many looked upon him as a role model and a humanitarian.

Leo?s many accomplishments included designing the 1976 Olympic coins depicting track and field sports and he is the artist author of the book A Fish Tale and award winning books Last Leaf First Snowflake to Fall and Ancient Thunder.

Before moving to Ottawa, Leo hunted, fished, trapped and guided in the woods and lakes surrounding his home of Couchiching. He loved travelling and working the trapline with his dad.

Thanks to Dr Archibald and Dr Mimeault as well as nurses Therese and Peggy for their heartfelt care and reassuring presence.

In memory of Leo, donations can be made to the Wabano Centre in Ottawa. Leo would give his last coins to those he felt needed them more than he did. He would wish only that the Spirit of Giving would continue.

A burial will be held on the Couchiching reserve at a later date.

I met Leo many years ago in Indianapolis. He was quiet, spoke from the heart. He was so proud of his children. He spoke about them often. We shared many laughs and heartfelt conversations. An incredibly creative and wise person. Sadly our last conversation was late part of 2001. I will always remember Leo and his words of wisdom. I have all his books and Im thankful he signed them. Some pictures. A lovely one of a horse. Im also thankful he had so much love around him. Rest In Peace My Friend Sparky

Leo was my dear friend, I am deeply sorry to learn of his passing. He was by far and away the most talented artist I've known, a true master. He had a unique process of writing and making art together, in developing his projects. The last time we spoke, he expressed his happiness with the support of his family: he was feeling the love. I send my condolences to the family and to all who miss him.

Martin,

I am so sorry to hear about the passing of your Dad. He was extremely accommodating when he would let us hang out at his place after taking the bus in from Morrisburg and letting us use his drafting table. My deepest condolences to you and your family.

Sincerely,

Ian Blais

My best friend from high school was his son Martin, and because of this I had the great pleasure of meeting Mr. Yerxa on several occasions, and seeing his beautiful works of art in person. Leo struck me as an extremely kind and gentle soul. My Father also knew Mr. Yerxa personally, and always praised his art and spoke highly of his character. His talents were many, and great.

My deepest condolences go out to his family, friends, and all those who's lives he touched. May his artwork and personal memories of him continue to bring people joy.

Whenever I see the magical and delicate art he created, I am stunned and transported by its beauty. Heartbreaking that there will be no more ... what other worlds he might have opened us to. Condolences...

Leo was an accomplished artist who recognized for his work in writing, illustration and design whether it was his design and illustration for the 1976 Olympic coins or being awarded the Governor General's Literary Award in 2006 for his book Ancient Thunder. Leo was also an exceptional writer an example of this was the short story he wrote in 1971 from the perspective of Tecumseh.
Perhaps the mission of an artist is to interpret beauty to people - the beauty within themselves. Langston Hughes said, Leo exemplified this, he made us all see the beauty in ourselves and the world around us.
To me Leo was like an older brother, he taught me so much and share his light with me I will miss him.
May he rest well and his spirit continue to thunder and enlighten us all.
