Jean METZLER Obituary

Jean Rockey Metzler, a longtime resident of Lake Worth, passed away peacefully on July 2, 2018 at the age of 93. Jean was born on May 24, 1925 in Westfield, NJ to James Kelso Rockey and Irene Lowe Rockey. She attended Westfield High School and graduated from Duke University in 1947. While at Duke, Jean met and married Robert J. Metzler and enjoyed a truly loving marriage until Bob's passing in 2003. In her youth, Jean "The Rocket" Rockey was a nationally-ranked junior tennis player and also loved playing baseball with the neighborhood boys. She was a member of the 600 Club (bowling), and was an exceptional golfer, winning numerous women's club championships at the Powelton Club in Newburgh, NY and The Farms Country Club in Wallingford, CT, as well as over 10 championships at Lake Worth Golf Club. Jean was additionally a musician, and had a beautiful singing voice. She was often a soloist with the choir of the First Presbyterian Church of Lake Worth, where Bob was also an elder. She also performed for several years with the Masterworks Chorus of Palm Beach. Jean was a creative crafter and doll maker. Jean and Bob had two sons: Robert (Debbi) of West Hartford, CT and James (Susan) of Culver City, CA. Jean is also survived by 5 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren, as well her sister-in-law, Margaret "Peggy" Metzler, brother-in-law, Stanley Ensminger, and many favorite nieces and nephews. She enjoyed all of her long lasting friendships in the community. A Memorial and Celebration of Life will be held in the fall. Please contact [email protected] or call (310) 559-6855 for details. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the First Presbyterian Church: 231 North Federal Hwy, Lake Worth, 33460, or Habitat for Humanity.
