Marvin Leggett Obituary

MARVIN EDWARD LEGGETT JR. Born in Tennessee on September 22, 1944 to Miriam and Joe Leggett, Marvin Edward Leggett Jr. died peacefully early Thursday morning, June 26, 2014 at Chapman Restorative Center in Riverside CA. He was preceded in death by both of his parents as well as his brother David Leggett and his niece Karin. He is survived by his sister Susan Rumans & her husband Neil Rumans of Arizona, their son Eric, nieces Alexis, Camyrn, Katie & Allyson, and a host of loving friends. Marvin (aka Ed/Eddy/Uncle Eddy) was an intrepid reader and book collector. He placed high value on education. Having earned his Bachelor's Degree from Arizona State University and his Master's from Azusa Pacific University, this learned man spent his lifetime both gaining and imparting knowledge--as a teacher of English, Humanities, Science Fiction & Fantasy (the course he created) at both Norte Vista HS and La Sierra High School, where he served as Chairman of the English Department for many years. In addition, Ed Leggett coached football & baseball during his time at Norte Vista HS--both schools in Alvord Unified School District (Riverside CA) from which he retired in 2002 after nearly 40 years as an educator. Ed was drafted into the Army in 1968 and thus served in the Vietnam War. He was married to Marilyn Smolik from 1968-1974. Marvin/Ed was known for his steadfast heart and for devotion to his friends. He compassionately supported a number of them through their own long-term, terminal illnesses. He will be remembered dearly for this sort of loyalty and his quiet concern for others. Marvin/Ed's friends enjoyed his dry, engaging sense of humor and his vast knowledge of books and authors. Additionally, Ed/Marvin loved discovering new and upcoming musicians as his extensive music collection well shows. His face would light up most, however, whenever he received news of his favorite team, the Cincinnati Reds! A Visitation will be held at Acheson and Graham Garden of Prayer Mortuary at 7944 Magnolia Ave, Riverside, CA 92504 on Mon, July 7, 10am to 2pm. Lunch & Memory Sharing to follow at 2:30pm at one of Ed/Marvin's favorite restaurants. His treat! May Marvin/Ed--kindest of men, beloved friend and brother. Rest in Peace.

I was reminiscing about high school and looked up Mr. Leggett. So sad to read of his passing. I was a student at La Sierra from 1978-1981 and he was by far my favorite teacher. I loved all his classes: Fiction and Fantasy (or "Fic and Fan" as Mr. Leggett referred to it), Science Fiction, American Literature, and Speed Reading. He acquainted me with so many great fantasy and science fiction novels. Such a great sense of humor. I'll never forget his "Still asking for Am Lit-5 in the upper right" when we were working on a test. Or "Write this down, please". Best teacher I ever had. Rest in peace, Mr. Leggett.

- Your captivating smile and personality
I will see you on the other side.

I taught with Ed at La Sierra High School in the early 1990s. His vast knowledge of literature, music, and sports, along with a love of good food, ensured that we would become immediate friends. He was a kind man, an exemplary professional, and a good friend. Ed was truly unique, as anyone fortunate to visit his "Hobbit House" and sit in his barber's chair can certainly attest. I am saddened by his passing, but consider it a privilege to have known him.

Mr Leggett was my 9 grade math teacher at Norte Vista High School. I remember him fondly because he saw that I was extremely shy and made great effort to get my parents and my other teacher's to give me extra help in this area. I spoke to him 4 or 5 years ago and told him how much I appreciated his concern! RIP Mr Leggett and thanks again! Lou "Edna' Bailey Class of '71

I read with sadness the passing of Ed Leggett. As the librarian at La Sierra I had close contact with Ed and always came back with a smile on my face. His grin, his sense of humor, his love of literature made him very special. I shall miss him.
