Robert Stockton Obituary

December 20, 1953 - May 13, 2020 If you knew Bob Stockton, you loved Bob Stockton. He was a wonderful, generous, kind, thoughtful, and energetically joyful leader. Robert "Bob" Alan Stockton, 66, "racing age 67" of Riverside, California, died May 13, 2020. He was born in San Diego, CA to Robert and Beverly Stockton. He received his B.S. in Construction Engineering in 1978 at California Polytechnic State University, Pomona. He was married to the love of his life, Kelli (Tyson) Stockton, for 16 years, and together for a total of 20 years. Between them, Bob and Kelli have 5 children and 4 grandchildren. "Work Hard, Play Hard, Pray Hard" was not only his motto, but it was the way Bob lived his life. Bob dedicated his life to making Riverside a better place, whether it was serving as the Vice President and Principal-in-Charge at Rick Engineering Company, Director and Vice President of the Monday Morning Group, serving as part of the Leadership Riverside Steering Program, member of the Engineering Advisory Board for California Baptist University (CBU), Director of Western Municipal Water District, board of Path of Life Ministries, Chair of the Greater Riverside Chamber of Commerce, East Hills Chamber board and Executive Leader for the American Heart Association. He was recognized as Father of the Year for the American Diabetes Association in 2014. He was also the Gubernatorial appointee to the California Board for Professional Engineers, Land Surveyors, and Geologists, and previously served the Riverside County YWCA, Riverside Planning Commission, Riverside Public Utilities, Riverside Sunrise Rotary and Doctors Without Borders. Bob was not only committed to making the city of Riverside better, but he also made the lives of everyone he met better by always putting others before himself. Bob was passionate about coaching athletes and gave his time sacrificially coaching the Woodcrest Christian Mountain Bike Team. Bob trained anyone who asked when preparing for Ironman challenges, Wildflower triathlons, half-marathons, Catalina 50K runs, Ragnar races, Endeavor adventure races (El Chivo), and many more. Bob was an athlete himself and could often be found racing alongside those he coached. In his younger days, he was part of the BAD (Bob And Don) racing team in their desert race cars for several years together. A Boy Scout Leader for his son's troop and "The Prop Guy" for his daughter's dance studio Just Plain Dancin'. If he wasn't racing, he was cheering from the sidelines. Bob's enduring spirit captivated any event as he cheered on anyone striving to accomplish their goals. But there was no greater cheerleader than Bob for his wife Kelli, co-owner of Riverside Jazzercise and The Personal Training Center (PTC), and a perfect partner with an equal zest for life. He even got his personal training certification to be closer to Kel. Bob could always be found in the front row of one of Kelli's classes and, most recently due to COVID, as director and videographer of some of her online Jazzercise classes. Bob and Kelli loved to travel. Of the many places around the world they were able to visit, Hawaii was always one of their favorite destinationswhich was evident from his love of Hawaiian print shirts and his turtle tattoo. Some of his most memorable moments traveling were when they were able to ride a portion of the Tour de France route in 2004 in France and in 2015, being baptized in the Jordan River in Israel by longtime friend and pastor, Matt Brown of Sandals Church, Riverside. According to Rusty Bailey, friend and the Mayor of Riverside, CA, "Bob Stockton was a true saint of Riverside. Bob was always generous with his spirit and his time. He brought heart and excellence to everything he put his mind to. He led a valued and faith-centric life and was the epitome of everything that was great and lived life to the fullest. Bob was a valued mentor, a wise sounding board, and a cherished friend and family member. Many of us take great peace in knowing that Bob is in the loving arms of his Savior." Bob is survived by his adoring wife Kelli; and was so extremely proud of his children, Nathan (Sarah), Heather, Adam, Travis (Lisa), Emily (Christopher); as well as grandkids Rages, Winter, Harley and Easton. Also one sister Karen (David) Holden and many nieces and nephews. A memorial service for Bob will be held online on Friday, June 12th, at 5:00 pm on live.sandalschurch.tv. Bob's ashes will be scattered in some of his favorite places. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to The "Coach Bob Stockton Memorial Endowed Scholarship" ua.calbaptist.edu/give. The scholarship will benefit Woodcrest Christian students headed to CBU. All gifts received by June 30th will be matched dollar for dollar by the University.

I worked for Bob first in the Carlsbad office of Rick Engineering then the San Marcos office. We moved to the Riverside area in 1987 to help Bob open the Riverside REC office. I too knew him in the BAD racing days. I will never forget the time we went to one of his races in Las Vegas. We saw him at the start line and he drew a map in the dirt of where their pit crew was parked. After several wrong turns including one where we actually got flagged onto the race course (unbeknownst to us), we had to launch our car up and over a huge berm to get out of the way from the racers barreling down on us! We had a good laugh after the race when we found them. Bob was such a great boss and friend. I lost touch with him when we moved away. I am so proud to see how involved he got in the Riverside community! I While I never met you Kelli I could see the joy you brought to his life via your pictures. And the two of you definitely looked like soulmates. Our hearts go out to you and your family for the loss of a truly great man. I was very lucky to know Bob Stockton.

I was hired by Bob right out of college and worked with him in the Carlsbad office. We would rival between CalPoly Pomona and SLO. I moved with to help open and help grow the Riverside office. Bob was a great boss, friend and role model. He, Dennis and I would water ski on Lake Paris in the morning before coming into the office. At that time he was working on his waterskiing skills, I am sure he got better. In fact, it looks like he mastered the wake surfing.
I recall meeting Bob and his family at one of BADs desert races - I think it was near Glamis. Bob was in the race car and had radioed in that he had run out of gas near the start/ finish line. He requested that I bring him a gas can to refuel. I was on a quad and I ended up bringing all the Stockton kids with their quads along with me. Long story short I went the wrong way on the race track and each of the kids quads started running out of gas. I ended putting the gas meant for Bob in my quad. We ended up going all the way around the entire race track leaving each quad one by one as it ran out of gas. It was getting dark and everyone was looking for us as we rolled in on my single quad. We were all tired and I was extremely embarrassed. Bob gave me the look we all know he can give but then smile and said thanks for keeping the kids safe.
My wife Lisa and enjoyed spending time with Bob. I have not spoken with Bob in over thirty years. Bob has led an extraordinary wonderfully life and I very much regret not staying in touch. A true example of a good dad, good husband and great human being. Bob leaves behind a legacy that will on for generations.
Kellie We have never met but I want you know that I was truly inspired by Bob service tonight.
Sincere Regards,
Clay Loomis

Bob was a friend, colleague, mentor and inspiration to me and will be truly missed by me and all who had the opportunity to know him well. He was a super competitive person that would try anything and he wore the scars to prove it. Twenty five years ago his staff got Bob a crash helmet that we encouraged him to wear all of the time because he had so many wild stories of how he would injury himself doing a variety of activities on the weekends fueled by an overdeveloped adrenaline gland. We even gave him the nickname "Crash" which he wore proudly. Bob was a soft spoken, gentle person with an easy humble manner who would do anything to help out his staff, their families, friends and the people attached to the many community organizations he participated with. This is a loss to all of us and will take time to reconcile as we try to understand why. This all being said, Bob would not want us to dwell on this with sadness but would want us make our own lives as fulfilling as he lived his. Truly a life well lived!
Love you man, Don

Bob has been a mentor and has been someone to look up to throughout my career over the last 17 years. I will look to ensure that his legacy lives on by emulating the traits that I most admired in Bob. His confidence in his work, his kind treatment of all he worked with, his ability to persuasive without being overbearing, and his eternal optimism and positive outlook of his acquaintances, coworker, family, and life. I will miss you Bob.

Gentle, kind, compassionate, dedicated, supportive, goofy, dad. There are so many stories that I could share that would help illuminate the incredible person that my dad is/was but every time I try, words fail to express the magnitude. I am so grateful that I had the honor and privilege of sharing life with him.

He will always be an angel and my hero. Dad, I love you so much. My appreciation and respect for you is infinite and true.

Knowing my dad, he would want his legacy to be that we all try, in whatever capacity we have, to be kind to each other. To show up again and again for those who need it. To love, to share, to support. He dedicated his life to public service. He spent every day of his life helping others.

In honor of my dad, consider finding a way to show up for someone in your life today, without hope or expectation for something in return. Out of the kindness of your heart.

I am thinking of Kelli today with so much love. Thank you for loving my dad so incredibly. His love for you could light up a whole room. I am also thinking of my brothers Adam and Nate, and my mom who remembers him as a very special person in this world, of Emily and Travis, and all of you who are impacted by this great loss. We are all in this together.

Thank you to everyone who has reached out and embraced me with your love and support. I am so profoundly grateful for you all.

With gratitude,
Heather Stockton

I did not know Bob Stockton personally. I am one of the many Riverside residents who exercise on Victoria Avenue. Runners, walkers, cyclists we enjoy the tradition of the road. His death was a tragedy! I send my heartfelt sympathy to Bobs wife, Kelli, and his family.

Bob and Kelli have had a huge influence in our lives. After seeing their beautiful wedding pictures, we were inspired to also get married in Lake Tahoe by the same pastor. We started training and competing in mountain bike races and triathlons with Bob's encouragement and guidance. Our annual camping/triathalon Wildflower trips are our most memorable. Our daughter's first word (besides mama & dada) was "Bob" from seeing him every week for mountain bike riding. Her very first tricycle was a 1st birthday present from Bob and Kelli in which our 2nd child also enjoyed and they still have 12 years later. We couldn't ask for a better mentor and friend and will always cherish the memories and influences from our beloved Bob.
