I want to commend you for the very appropriate public celebration of your fathers life. The community has lost our premier historian, story teller, harmonica player and author. I often sat with him at Rotary and greatly enjoyed his company and friendship.

Mr. Appleyard was such a kind, intelligent and giving soul. Always enjoyed his talks and visiting with him at events downtown. What a positive impact he made on so many in his life. He will be missed.

To all the family — Bill and I are sending our love and prayers to you. We both were honored to have known John for so many years and have the greatest memories of him as a very special friend, mentor, and just the wonderful person he was. We the living have lost another patriotic pioneer and a community leader who was humble and generous with his time and talent. That's why John was universally liked and widely respected. My best wishes go to Dick, Diane, and all the downline Appleyard clan who are coping with their loss. John and Dick bailed me out of a midlife crisis, and for that I will be ever grateful. Even though my time with the Appleyard Agency was short, it was an honor to work with John, Eleanor, and the Appleyard family. As entertainer Vince Gill would put it: Your time on Earth is done, John; now go rest high on that mountain of Eternity with your beloved Eleanor.

Pensacola has lost a one-of-a-kind treasure. We are fortunate that he not only lived so long but continued his extraordinary contributions to our community through his beloved history and storytelling into this advanced age. Condolences to the family of this remarkable man and to all who loved him and all who appreciated him.

John was "Mr. Pensacola". He wrote our Church history when we were celebrating our 100th anniversary at Gadsden St. United Methodist Church. I was amazed at his memory even in 2001.

Mr. Appleyard was a wonderful man. While serving at director at Armstrong Cork Company he was my father's boss and my father loved him. We visited the Visitor Center last year and heard him speak on the history of Pensacola. I watched with awe at the way he visited his wife and they would visit through the window at The Haven. I think they had a wonderful life together. So sorry he had to leave us but I'm sure he missed his wife very much and wanted to go on and be with her. Praying for his family.
