Dear Nicky, Jimmy, and the whole DiCicco Family,
I was saddened and shocked to hear of Doms passing. Dom was not only one of the nicest people I ever worked with but one of the nicest people I've had the pleasure to know. Fittingly my last conversation with Dom was about his family and the health of his mother. What I will remember most about him, other than his generosity, will be his laugh. My prayers are with you. Rest in peace Dom.

I was stunned, shocked and utterly saddened to learn of Dom’s passing, so much so that I felt compelled to leave a remembrance in this Legacy Book. I knew Dom since he was knee-high to a grasshopper, delivered the Bulletin to his house for many years and attended St. Nick’s with his sister. I can state with a degree of absolute certainty that my life is better because of him. While I lost touch with his family many years ago, resonating in my mind are episodes of this fine, outstanding individual who taught me the definition of intestinal fortitude, something that I have carried with me all of my life.

Many years ago I had the privilege of being Dom’s basketball coach. It was at a time when one could openly yell at a player, there were no soccer-moms, lawsuits were not considered and a child’s actual game time was a by-product of ability. Dom started with me while in the 5th grade and was adamant about being treated in an identical manner to all of his teammates. No matter how difficult a task or drill, if others were required to do it, Dom required that I cause him to do the same. His ability, at that time, was limited. Like his teammates, each was a 5th grader with no formal basketball training. Each and every game was laborious because it was this group of 5th graders playing the 8th grade students at each of the other schools. Compounding this was the fact that St. Nick’s did not have its own court and was relegated to playing every game on the opposition’s court.

Practice was each day – Dom never missed. Known for his wit and for speaking his mind, Dom’s basketball skills and court acumen grew exponentionally. Lacking some of the physical attributes of some of the other players, Dom possessed one thing which set him apart from everyone – the desire to be the best and to achieve despite odds, obstacles or handicap. Stated simply Dom possessed intestinal fortitude and had the heart to overcome anything. In my life when I though of or spoke about intestinal fortitude I always thought of him.

The most vivid manifestation of what Dom was all about, at least for me, transpired in a basketball game against the league’s premier team – St. Monica. Trailing by almost triple digits, Dom entered the game in the final quarter and played with such intensity that one might have thought we trailed by a point. St. Monica’s was known for its strength and it was standard to apply a full court press, which was the key to their success. The ball was inbounded to Dom. Here is a fifth grader playing against 8th graders who basically lived on the basketball court. Dom took the inbound pass and was immediately surrounded by three of St. Monica’s finest. Intuitively, Dom headed towards the sideline, put the ball behind his back, hit it with his other arm and dribbled past everyone the entire length of the court and, as if written by God, he scored a basket – perhaps the only basket of the game – absolutely a remarkable feat. He spoke nothing of it, acted as if it was what he was supposed to have done, and accepted no congratulatory remarks. As I am today with his passing, I was stunned having witnessed such an incredible feat. In the many years that have passed I have used that example of intestinal fortitude as a measuring stick in my own life.

I apologize for the verbosity but wanted to say thank you to Dom and Rita for having a son who added to my life, for that son being the fine individual he was and for having had the privilege to have known Dom. I extend my condolences to the entire family. May the Dear Lord take him and may he rest in peace from now until forever.
