JARVIS
JOHN A., 84, of Lancaster and Pocono Lake Preserve PA, died of cancer on November 7, 2009. He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Sarah (Sally) Melcher Jarvis, 4 children, Andrew (Elizabeth J. Farmer), Anne (John C. Gerbner), Virginia (Richard Q. Whelan) and Sarah; 8 grandchildren; brother, Michael (Sheila), Toronto, Canada and sister-in-law, Rosalind Jarvis, Glasgow.
A native of Glasgow, Scotland, he was predeceased by his grandson, Richard Q. Whelan, Jr.; brothers, James E. and Geoffrey. He was a graduate of the University of St. Andrews, Scotland and earned his MS in Ed. from the University of Pennsylvania.
Headmaster Emeritus of the Lancaster Country Day School (1965 - 1990), Assistant Headmaster at the Episcopal Academy (1949 - 1965), John Jarvis was a recognized leader in secondary school education, but his positive influence extended far beyond the walls of any one school.
He was a scholar, an artist, an athlete and devoted husband and father. His abilities in so many fields allowed him appreciate the unique qualities of each child and person he met. Although he led classes in Latin and History, when asked what he taught, Jarvis said, "I teach boys and girls."
He was a past President of the Pennsylvania Association of Independent Schools, member of the St. Andrews Society, Philadelphia, founding member of the Hourglass Foundation, past president of the Historic Preservation Trust, Board member of Preservation Pennsylvania, founding member of Citizens for Responsible Growth, chairman of the Mayor's Committee on Public Housing and past Commodore of the Order of Pequeanauts.
A man of vision and generator of campaigns that bettered the many communities he served, John Jarvis was a man ahead of his time; yet, he remained deeply rooted in the present and was a remarkable citizen of this world.
Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend his Memorial Service at First Presbyterian Church, 140 East Orange St., Lancaster PA, on Saturday, November 14, at 11 A.M. with the Rev. Dr. Randolph T. Riggs officiating. Private family Interment. The family will receive friends Sat. from 9:30 until the time of Service. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the John and Sally Jarvis Scholarship Fund at Lancaster Country Day School, 725 Hamilton Rd, Lancaster PA 17603.

Dear Sally, There are so many memories of John's friendship and his many kindnessess to the family over the years that I can't begin to address them all. You both have enriched this community with your dedicated service and gifts. To a life well and fully lived.

Dear Sally,
Bruce, Seth, Jackie and I wish to extend our sincere condolences to you and your family.
We have such fond memories of John and truly feel that he helped shape the lives of our family. We often speak of him and the days spent at LCDS and will continue to do so.
