STOCKTON SMITH Obituary

SMITH
STOCKTON NEWBOLD

Mr. Smith, born August 12, 1954, passed away in his Villanova, PA home surrounded by his family on Sunday afternoon, August 19, 2018, at the age of 64. A graduate of Eaglebrook School in Deerfield, MA; The Hill School in Potts-town, PA; and the University of Virginia in Charlottesville, VA with a degree in aeronautical engineering, Mr. Smith began his career as an aviator in the United States Navy. Ultimately rising to the rank of Lieutenant Commander, he attended the prestigious Navy Fighter Weapons School (popularly known as TOPGUN) in San Diego, CA, served aboard the aircraft carrier U.S.S. Nimitz, and piloted the Douglas A-4 Skyhawk and the Grumman F-14 Tomcat.
He closed out his military service with a stint in the United States Naval Reserve, concurrently with civilian duties as First Officer aboard the McDonnell Douglas MD-80, for American Airlines. Mr. Smith concluded his flying career as the CEO of Atlantic Aviation, a private flight services firm in Delaware founded by his grandfather, Henry B. duPont.
A lifelong avid yachtsman, the Pennsylvania native skippered his 44-foot sloop Weather Gauge to victory in numerous East Coast races - primarily centered around his family's summer haven of Mount Desert Island, ME - and, in his youth, accompanied his late father E. Newbold Smith on the latter's yacht Reindeer to the far reaches of the Arctic, setting a world record for northernmost journey by private sailboat.
Mr. Smith is survived by his wife Priscilla H. Smith; elder sister Eleuthera Grassi; younger brother Henry B. Smith; sons Michael, Alexander, and William; his sister-in-law Andrea D. Smith (widow of his late brother Lewis duP Smith); his stepchildren Philippa K. Eindhoven and P. Augustus Klipstein and numerous nephews and nieces.
Relatives and friends are invited to his Funeral Service on Friday, August 24, 2018, at 11:00 A.M., at the Episcopal Church of The Redeemer in Bryn Mawr, PA., 230 Pennswood Rd., Bryn Mawr, PA 19010.

Stocky and I were fellow instructor pilots in the Navy. He was a special guy and a great pilot. He departed far too soon. Fair winds and following seas my friend.

Stocky and I were squadron mates in the Navy. He was a great guy and very talented naval aviator. We were both instructor pilots in Beeville, Texasin the advanced jet training program. We flew many flights together and with students. Stocky was well liked and very respected in the squadron. He will be missed. May he Rest In Peace and fly ok passes.

I have just learned and am saddened to hear of Stocky's passing. I am the executive director of the Battle Harbour Historic Trust in Labrador. His generous donations really helped our charitable organization. In 2014, in memory of his father, he donated funds for our new generator. I had the pleasure of meeting Stocky in 2016 when he visited on the Weather Gauge. One of my enduring memories of Battle Harbour and Stocky will be of him saying with a smile on his face after tying up, "let's get some electricity from Dad on the boat" and then plugging in to our generator. Today, I was just about to email him to inform him of our new wharf and looked forward to his next visit to see it. I will raise a toast to Stocky when we have our grand opening for the wharf next summer. Sincerely

Really shocked and saddened! My condolences to Stocky's family. I met Stocky the first day of kindergarten at the Haverford School. He was my oldest friend. I spent many weekends at Thornedge Farm through elementary school, having an absolute blast. When I would be told it was time for me to go home, I would burst into tears. We attended The Hill School together, and for a time were roommates. We had lots of laughs during those years. Stocky had a car, which was not allowed, but his parents didn't know it wasn't allowed, and the school didn't know he had it. On weekends we were off on numerous adventures, one memorable one to the Purnell School (girl's only). Many summers I was fortunate to sail as crew aboard Reindeer. Stocky's father, Newbold, was larger than life. Certainly, Stocky worshiped him. He was what every boy would have wanted as a father. We both attended college in Virginia, he at UVA and I at W&L, and periodically partied in each other's fraternities. I was with Stocky when he had his first date with Sally, and later I was an usher in the wedding. I was witness to the bachelor party speech by Lewis which brings tears to my eyes to this day. Regretfully, Stocky and I went our separate ways after college: he to the Navy, and I to corporate American. I have lived in the Midwest for the past 34 years. We exchanged Christmas cards and an occasional e-mail. This past June I sent him a note asking if he would join me at our Hill School 45th reunion. I am now writing this from an island in Lake Superior, and it's August 23rd at 10:30 pm. I just got the news. I would have liked so much to have jumped on a plane to Philadelphia. When I think back to my school days, my time with Stocky were days of yore. Much of my boyhood fun would not have been possible without him and his family. When my children ask what sort of adventures I had as a boy, the name Stocky frequently comes up. They all know Stocky but have never met him and, sadly, never will.

It is the will of God and Nature that these mortal bodies be laid aside, when the soul is to enter into real life; 'tis rather an embryo state, a preparation for living; a man is not completely born until he be dead: Why then should we grieve that a new child is born among the immortals?

RIP Stocky
