Suffolk - Vera Jakeman Bright, 79, left her earthly home to be with her Savior on December 20, 2015 at Sentara Meadowview Terrace Healthcare in Clarksville, Virginia where she had made her home for almost two years. She was predeceased by her husband John Robert Bright in March of 2014; her father Wilson Arthur and mother Ruth Keesee Jackman along with her sister, Mary Jakeman Hobbs who also predeceased her. She was an active member of Magnolia United Methodist Church as long as her health permitted; she served as Outreach Chairman, certified Lay Speaker and Sunday school teacher as well as a member of the United Methodist Women and President of that group. Mrs. Bright gave 25 years of service as a volunteer with the Old Dominion Area Council, Boy Scouts of America. She served as a Den Leader, District Cub Chairman, and Council Cub Chairman and as a member of the Executive Board of the Council. She was honored by the Council with the Silver Beaver Award, the highest award that can be given to a volunteer by the Council. She was the first Cub Day Camp Director and gave sessions on Day Camping at various events throughout the area. Mrs. Bright was also a volunteer with the American Red Cross where she served as well as trained other members of the Disaster Action Team. She was a member and past president of the American Legion Auxiliary Unit 57, as well as a membership with Stafford Unit 290. She served as president of the Suffolk Unit and was District President in 1960. Mrs. Bright graduated from Old Dominion University with a teaching degree and retired from teaching at Lakeland High School in Suffolk. Left to cherish her memory are her sons and their wives: Arthur and Faye of Suffolk, VA, John and Lynn of Clarksville, VA and Steven and Deborah of Mooresville, NC. She is also survived by her seven grandchildren, Samantha, Joshua, Seth, Cabell, Art, Henry, Thomas and his wife Jena and one great grandson, Benjamin. Visitation will be on Monday, December 21, 2015 at R.W. Baker Funeral Home, from 6pm to 8pm. Funeral Services will be Tuesday Morning at 11:00 am in the chapel at R.W. Baker Funeral Home & Crematory, Entombment to follow at Meadowbrook Memorial Gardens. The family suggests that Memorial Contributions be made to the Alzheimer's Association in her name.
