Sarah M. Peterson

Norfolk - Sarah Michelle Peterson, 15, of Norfolk passed away on Monday, January 20, 2014 at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital.

Sarah was born on December 28, 1998 in Slidell, Louisiana, and during her life lived in Slidell, Louisiana and Quantico, Virginia, before moving to Norfolk. She was a freshman honor roll student at Maury High School, and was enrolled in the school's Medical and Health Specialties Program. Sarah was an avid runner and was a member of the Maury Girls' Cross-Country team. While a member of the Blair Middle School Track Team, Sarah was the team's top runner in the 1600-meter race, and placed 2nd in the 1600-meter race in both the Norfolk Middle School Track Championship and the Norfolk-Portsmouth Middle School Track Championship. She was a Girl Scout from the time she entered first grade, was currently a Senior Girl Scout, and had recently been awarded her Silver Award, the highest award available for Girl Scout Cadettes and the second highest award in Girl Scouting. Sarah also loved art, and during the summer of 2013 volunteered as a teacher's assistant in the Norfolk Public Schools Summer Art Academy.

She was predeceased by her paternal grandfather, Dr. Leland D. Peterson of Norfolk. She is survived by her parents, Col Eric F. Peterson, USMC(Ret) and Michelle R. Peterson, her sister, Ivy Peterson, and two brothers, Ted Peterson and Joe Peterson, all of Norfolk. She is also survived by grandparents Betty M. Peterson of Norfolk, and James B. Morgan and Patricia L. Morgan of Leonard, Michigan. She leaves behind several aunts and uncles and many cousins.

A celebration of Sarah's life will be held at First Lutheran Church, 1301 Colley Ave, Norfolk, at 11 a.m. on Monday, January 27, followed by interment in the church columbarium. At the conclusion of the service a reception will be held at the church. In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that memorial contributions be made to the Sarah Michelle Peterson Foundation, which has been established to fight depression in teenagers. Those contributions may be sent to 1522 Bolling Ave., Norfolk, VA, 23508. Condolences may be offered to the family at:

I am so sorry for your loss. My son attends Maury and knew Sarah. My heart just aches for you . My son has bipolar disorder along with other things. Its very challenging and the worst part is you would never even guess he has it. You can not see how they suffer but its very deep and painful. I am praying for your family and for Sarah.

My family lives in Largo, FL. When Jim posted this on FB, I was absolutely saddened not just that she passed @ such a young age, but that she suffered from DEPRESSION ! people just do not understand that it's a real disease & sadly can go unnoticed. I've personally lived w/it for 25 yrs. & even w/the right meds still have my BAD days, but it can (evntually) be controllrd. But it's much harder for a 15 yr. Old. Please just KNOW you did all you could have done for her & beyond that , it was in God's hands. Because you ALL have Faith & Belief in God! You know he was with her during this Tragedy & continues to do so , as He is with all of you , relatives & her friends. She is your precious guardian angel & forever will be.
