Family, my thoughts and prayers are with you during this time of loss. I will always cherish the fond memories of Aunt Persis with her warm smile and tender voice. She will be missed.

Persis was a dear friend. I have precious memories of our shared love of flowers, visits to antique shops, opera and our "un-club". She was very humble , kind, and a joy to be with. May she rest in peace.

When I began teaching art with Norfolk Public Schools, I met an incredable lady with a warm heart and a huge volume of talent. Her name wa s Persis Jennings. Throughout the years, even after she retired, she shed an engaging smile every time I saw her. I can still feel the way she greeted me with a gentle hug followed by sincere eye contact. She would then hold my hand with both of hers as we spoke. I feel blessed to have had those gifted hands in mine. Rest in peace in the Lord's arms, dear Persis.

Mrs. Jennings was an outstanding artist and educator for whom I have the fondest memories. In my mind she stood shoulder to shoulder with giants among African-American Artists such as Charles White and John Biggers, whom she knew as a student at then Hampton Institute. I fondly remember the retrospective of her work mounted at Norfolk State University some years ago, also featured in the Virginian-Pilot. A mural that she painted while a student at Hampton for the East End Baptist Church in Suffolk can still be seen there. As a fellow artist, she was always supremely kind to me and full of wisdom. Though she will be missed, she leaves behind a rich legacy. My deepest sympathy to the family.
