N. Gray Obituary

Dr. N. Turner Gray

Virginia Beach - On April 24, 2017 God welcomed home a fine man, Dr. N. Turner Gray. His survivors include his wife of 58 years, Sylvia Moore Gray, a daughter Laura Lynne Terveer (Bernie), a son Turner Gray, Jr. (Mary), four grandchildren Keely Anderson (Eric), Tucker Terveer, Gianna Cardone, Nicole Gray and two great grandchildren Averie and Sadie.

Dr. Gray was born in Gloucester, Virginia to Stanley and Nellie Gray (both deceased) on October 16, 1935. He had one sibling, a brother who was lost at sea in a plane crash in 1956. He was a graduate of Gloucester High School, Randolph Macon College and the Medical College of Virginia School of Medicine (1962). Upon completing his residency in pediatrics, he moved with his family to Virginia Beach, Virginia to open his medical practice. He was the first board certified pediatrician in Virginia Beach. Before he could be joined by his future partner in medicine, Dr. Robert Mosby, he was drafted by the Navy and sent to Quonset Point, RI, to service his country for two years.

Returning to Virginia Beach, he joined Dr. Mosby in their life-long partnership in the practice of Pediatric Medicine. During these years he served as a local medical examiner (40 + years) in Norfolk and Virginia Beach, working with the local police at death investigations. In this capacity, he taught at the Police Academy.

Dr. Gray was a member of the First Baptist Church of Virginia Beach and a longtime advisor to the Virginia Beach Volunteer Rescue Squad (Station 14) and served on the boards of the Virginia Beach Rescue Squad Foundation, and the Virginia Beach Crime Solvers. He was honored by the Rotary Club as a Paul-Harris Fellow. He was also honored by the City of Virginia Beach by having December 17th declared Dr. N. Turner Gray Day.

As an avocation, he enjoyed helping out a friend by driving a tractor trailer over much of the country. He also enjoyed reunions with his Kappa Alpha fraternity brothers.

Professionally, he was a member of the American Medical Association, The American Academy of Pediatrics, The medical Society of Virginia, The Virginia Beach Medical Society, and the National Association of Medical Examiners.

Dr. Gray was so fond of his patients and wore cowboy boots and displayed model trucks to amuse the little ones.

There will be a visitation at H.D. Oliver Funeral Apts., Laskin Rd Chapel on Friday April 28, 2017 from 6-8 pm. with funeral services following on Saturday at 1:00 p.m. in the funeral home chapel. Interment will follow in Eastern Shore Chapel Cemetery.

In honor of Dr. Gray, memorial donations may be made to the Virginia Beach Rescue Squad (740 Virginia Beach Blvd, Virginia Beach, VA 23451) or to the Virginia Beach Crime Solvers (2509 Princess Anne Rd #15, Virginia Beach, VA 23456). Online condolences may be made to the family at hdoliver.com.

I would like to express my condolences to the Gray family. I'm reminded of a very kind man. You all were very warm, welcoming and my friends during my years growing up across the street on Quail Point Road . It's wonderful to hear from my mother what a beautiful family you have and to celebrate his legacy . Take care all. Sincerely , Paige

Dr. Gray and Dr. Mosby were my brother and my pediatricians until the day when I called, sick and feverish, and Dr. Gray told me that now that I was married it was time for me to find another doctor. I was heartbroken. Dr. Gray was a fine man. My family is honored to have known him.

Dr. Gray and his partner Dr. Mosby were our pediatricians in the 70s and 80s. I can still remember the cowboy boots and him telling my parents all about his latest cross country 18 wheel adventure. Rest in Peace.

Dr. Gray was a fine man. We loved him as a doctor for both our children, and as a friend and then are honored to know his son. We are so sorry for his family's loss. He will be missed. He always had a funny story and always made us feel like his best friends whenever we saw him. It was an honor to know him and we are blessed. Prayers.

Dr. Gray was our family's pediatrician - and I have very fond memories of him. Easy to laugh and smile - and those cowboy boots (I remember fondly). We're lucky to have a gentleman as good as Dr. Gray in our world. Sending the family condolences and warm thoughts.

Dr Gray (Turner) was my children's pediatrician but he was also our friend.
He was always the same person at his office or where ever he met you. He was a true friend.
He served his God here on earth and now he is in heaven with Him he will be missed God's gain is our loss.
May God comfort you Sylvia and your family.

What a fine man. Dr Gray was such a wonderful pediatrician to my brother and me. My mother loved him and we did too. Always felt that gentle yet confident air that let us know we were in good hands. And somehow, despite the volume of military and civilian children in his care over so many years in VB (and the forensics circles), he remembered us when he would see us around town as adults. What a wonderful, genuine medical professional he was. God rest his soul and bless his grieving family.
