John Dietzen Obituary

PEORIA - Father John J. Dietzen, 83, retired priest of the Diocese of Peoria and prominent columnist in the national Catholic press, passed away at 10:28 a.m. Sunday, March 27, 2011, at OSF Saint Francis Medical Center.

He was born Aug. 19, 1927, in Danville, Ill., to John W. and Margaret Leven Dietzen.

A graduate of Danville High School, he continued his education at St. Bede College in Peru and St. Mary of the Lake Seminary in Mundelein. He had a Master of Arts degree in English and a Licentiate in Sacred Theology, and was ordained at the Cathedral of St. Mary on June 6, 1954.

From 1954 to 1957, he was assistant pastor at St. Mary's Cathedral in Peoria, and began his career in the Catholic press as associate editor of The Catholic Post, a position he held for 16 years. From 1968 to 1973, he was chaplain of St. Joseph Nursing Home in Lacon. In the same period, he led Family Life Programs in the diocese and later became chairman of Diocesan Respect Life Board. He became pastor of St. Mark's Parish in Peoria in 1973, and then in 1983, he became pastor of Holy Trinity Parish in Bloomington.

He retired from active ministry in 1998 but remained active as diocesan vicar for retired priests, celebrated Mass in various parishes and served on the board of community organizations.

His service to the Catholic press includes writing a syndicated column of questions and answers on Catholic belief and practice for Catholic News Service in Washington, D.C., which is still carried in Catholic newspapers from coast to coast. He served the Catholic Press Association as secretary and board member.

He is the author of three books, "With Heart and Hand, a Guide to Personal Prayer for the Modern Catholic," "Catholic Q and A" and "Doors of Hope."

I thank God for Father Dietzen,
What a wonderful man of God he was. I'm no Catholic but I'm a Christian. I met Father Dietzen in one of my most darkest hours. He prayed for me and supported me and had never met me. You truly have to be a man of God to reach out to a complete stranger. I am totally blessed to have known him for such a short time. May God truly bless those who mourn him as I just found out, he was an amazing example of a man, that was sold out for Christ and I am inspired by his walk.

May Fr. Dietzen rest in peace and may perpetual light shine upon him. Our most sincere condolences to his family. Fr. Dietzen was our pastor at Holy Trinity for many years, baptized all of our children, was a favorite guest at our home for multiple dinners, and loved to hear me play Beethoven's Pathetique Sonata on the piano. I also was on the Holy Trinity Pastoral Council with him for three years, where I was so impressed by his great love for the Catholic faith and his wisdom. We moved to St. Louis in 2002, but he was always faithful about sending Christmas cards with original poems each year. How he will be missed by so many of us whose lives he touched!
In hora mortis meae, voca me.
Et iube me, venire ad te,
ut cum Sanctis tuis, laudem te
in saecula saeculorum. Amen.

Father John had a huge influence on my life as part of the Catholic Register. I worked with him at the Register right after I graduated from the Academy of Our Lady. He was such a gentle person, truly concerned about others and devoted to his vocation. Not only that but he played a pretty good guitar!!! I use to sing 8:00 daily Mass at St. Joseph's for Fr. Dietzen during those years and attending his Mass was a fantastic way to start my day. He was dedicated to Pre-Cana and worked diligently to continue this awesome program. I am truly blessed to have been a small part of his life and able to call him my friend and my counselor. May he find his well deserved peace with our Lord. He will always be close to my heart. My prayers and condolences go out to his family and friends.

This man will be greatly missed. His caring, his concern, his laughter, his thoughtfulness will leave a great void in many lives. As for me, I'll carry his spirit close to my heart. His influence has been felt deeply by many. His legacy will continue in all who were lucky enough to know him. The ripple effect of his love will carry forward for many of us as we make our own choices as to how we treat and care for others. He was great because he was the best of what a man could be. - Anne (Finan) Fleming

This holy man was a shining beacon to all of us. He empowered the laity, and stood up for Jesus and his Church, always in the most gentle and humble manner. We were graced to have him with us. May the Lord give us more men like John Dietzen.

Father Dietzen was in my humble opinion, a truly holy man. He provided counsel to our marriage and I stand in awe of him.

Such a wonderful priest! He shall be greatly missed. Father was a "people person" which we so desperately need today and many times find lacking in the quality found today. Fr. John was humble, caring, and more concerned about others than himself. I pray his soul finds a well deserved peace and the Gates of Heaven open wide allowing him to pass into glory. Thank you Lord for allowing us this wonderful servant.
