Gerald Unks Obituary

Gerald Unks
MORTON - Dr. Gerald Unks, 82, formerly of Morton, distinguished and beloved UNC, School of Education professor, died on Saturday, November 9, 2019.
He was born in Peoria, IL, on November 12, 1936, to Virgil J. Unks and Edna Mae (Fife) Unks. He graduated with the class of 1954 from Morton High School and went on to further his education with a B.S. degree in Education from the University of Illinois, Urbana ('58), M.A. in History Education from Bradley University, Peoria ('61), and Doctorate in Education, University of Illinois, Urbana ('70).
Gerry's life passion was education. His career started at Evanston High School (Evanston, IL), where for 6 years he taught Social Studies. Upon receiving his doctoral degree, he joined the faculty of University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill, where he rose through the ranks to full professor. In his 45 years at UNC, he taught more than 24,000 students, received 13 teaching awards, including the Tanner Award twice, the Standard Oil award, the Amoco award, and most cherished by him – 4 UNC Favorite Professor awards as voted by the full student body and colleagues.
His signature class was called "Education in America" and was listed by Kiplinger nationally as a "class that gets students talking." Through engaging, provocative and entertaining conversations, he presented the education systems' norms, pitfalls, unintended impacts and opportunities, in a way that both challenged students' assumptions and called them to action. He was described as a masterful story teller that could hold the attention of the class room of 140 students, from start to finish. For many years, the class was taught in Peabody Hall, room 104, which was dedicated to Gerry in 2016.
Gerry's publishing credits include four books, numerous contributing book chapters, journal articles and 17 years in the role of Editor of the High School Journal, one of the oldest peer-reviewed academic journals in education.
Gerry continued his educational and social skill developing of students outside of the class room. The extra rooms of his large home on Maple Lane were regularly rented out to over 120 graduate and undergraduate students over the years. The kitchen table was frequently the sight of group discussion and debate with Dr. Unks, late into the night, and these students that benefited from his hospitality consider themselves part of a special fraternity and stay in touch with each other to this day.
The other lifelong passion of Gerry was travel. He wished to open up the minds of as many students as possible to other cultures of the world, which often led to revelations about their own culture and ethnocentricities. He led 36 years of Summer Study Abroad programs, taking more than 2,400 students to London or other parts of the world. He himself adventured to China and Russia during the days of the Cold War.
Gerry was preceded in death by his parents; his infant brother, David Thomas; and brother-in-law, Duane E. Greiner.
He is survived by his sister, Arlene Unks Greiner of Morton, IL; and two nephews, Steven J Greiner of Chicago and Daniel T. Greiner of Chicago.
The family wishes to thank UNC Hospice of Chapel Hill and the entire staff at The Pines at Carolina Meadows in Chapel Hill for their loving care.
A funeral service will be held at Chapel of the Cross on Franklin Street in Chapel Hill on Friday, November 15, at 10:30 a.m. Immediately following the service, the family will receive friends in the chapel parish hall for a luncheon. Personal remarks and comments from the gathering will be encouraged in a celebration of Gerry's life.
Memorials are encouraged to be sent to endow the Gerald Unks Undergraduate Travel Fellowship, which annually provides 6 deserving students with monetary funding to pursue foreign travel. Gerry established this fellowship due to his realization there is a true need for understanding and communication between people of various nationalities and cultures as a method of preserving world peace, and with hope of increasing international awareness among citizens of the United States of America. Funds should be sent to Gerald Unks Travel Fund, University Development, UNC-Chapel Hill, P O Box 309, Chapel Hill, NC 27514.

I am taking this opportunity to once again ponder about my treasured time spent in your company as you 'held court' every evening in your home that you shared with us! After 55 years, last week, Oct 2022, I returned to Chapel Hill to join in the celebration of Larry Miller's induction in the UNC Hall of Fame for his stellar basketball contribution. Many players from the 1968 team were present. You knew most of them, and know that they all speak so highly of you. Again RIP dear friend, until we should meet again... Suzi Wood Mutascio

Additional to the memories I expressed in my guest book entry yesterday, I would very much like to be in touch with others like me who were so very fortunate to live in Gerry's home in 1968/1969, so that we can add to those memories. We were Bo and Suzi Wood, friends of Cindy and Danny Talbott. Please email if you were there... [email protected] .

So very sorry to have missed finding you in time to have been able to reminisce about our wonderful time sharing your home in 1967/68, living in your basement apartment. Bo loved your class, and I even attended your classes as a guest sometimes. You were such fun and an amazing friend. I only regret that we lost touch over the 50+ years since that magical era. RIP gently dear Gerry, knowing you left this world far much better than you found it... Love always...

Dr Unks was the most phenomenal educator I ever had the honor of meeting.
The final lecture of Education in America was one I had the privilege of returning to hear year after year, and his passion never faltered in its delivery.

The greatest educator I ever knew, Dr Unks opened my eyes, challenged my assumptions, and increased my understanding of effective teaching and American Society. Although his course was not intended for teacher training but instead to increase the understanding of the educational system for future parents and leaders, I became a private piano teacher and am so much more of an effective teacher because of Dr. Unks. Thanks to him my online reviews are 4.97. I had the pleasure and privilege of having lunch with Dr Unks at that restaurant of great Carolina traction, The Rathskeller, 25 years after I took his course, on the day in 2005 when Carolina won the NCAA men's basketball championship versus his alma mater, the University of Illinois. And for those who may be wondering, he pulled for the Heels. Everyday I teach, and I have a reputation of being very outstanding applying the techniques and philosophy he helped develop in me, My career honors him as a young generation benefits from the way he touches their lives. God bless the greatest professor I ever knew who also was a very kind and caring human being.

Jerry Unks grew up in the little town of Mornton, Illinois where we were together in the same grade at Morton High. That was many years before he became Dr Unks.
It was in the 50's, I remember well In Coach Carpenters Class, how he always knew the answers in the current events discussion.. One day I said," how is it that you always know what is going on in the world?". He said, "My parents have us discuss the news each night at the dinner table".
Bravo to Jerry's parents for helping to mold Jerry to be a brilliant student and then eventually to be a beloved and award winning professor.
Never underestimate the power and blessings that come from being a dedicated parent.
Arlene, please accept my sympathy.

Thinking of Dr. Unks' family and friends at this time. He was a truly stellar feller and outstanding and memorable professor at UNC. Rest In Peace.

Dr. Unks was such a great teacher. One day, after class, he mentioned to some of us that he was digging up his yard to put in a drainage system. Four of us immediately offered to help. When we got there it was a fiasco, with Dr. Unks in high glory, directing us where to dig. We dug up his entire yard. He was delighted. I got an A in his class.

Dr. Unks was one of my favorite professors at Carolina. I was just talking about his class last week and how much I enjoyed it. He truly cared about his students. He will be missed. My deepest sympathy to the family.

A close friend since the first grade. We shared years of experiences even though many miles apart. He proved to be a true intellectual light to many of those he touched. I'm sure he will be remembered by them as I will remember him.

Dr. Unks was nothing less than a hero to his own students, to those his own students would teach and guide, and to me personally. He taught me, advised me, regaled me with stories in his home, and attended a party to celebrate the end of the semester at the Estes Park apartment I shared with an alumnus of 1 Maple Drive. These memories rank high among my most treasured, and I am deeply grateful to Dr. Unks for them.
