Rex Hume Obituary

Rex D. Hume, lifelong resident of Indiana, died at his home in Valparaiso, surrounded by his loving family. He was born in Winslow and lived in Bloomington and Indianapolis. He attended Phillips Exeter Academy, graduated from Princeton University with a degree in Politics, and achieved an MA in Political Science from Indiana University. His lifelong loves were public service and music, and he served on the boards of several organizations, including the Bloomington Public Transit Board, as a Committeeperson for the Monroe County Democratic Precinct Committee, Treasurer of the Monroe County Democratic Party, Democratic member of the Monroe County Election Board, and served as treasurer for numerous county and state political candidates. His professional career mirrored his personal life of service, and he became Director of the Institute for Research in Public Safety, Information Director of the Indiana State Democratic Central Committee, and held positions in state government, last for the Indiana State Board of Tax Commissioners. He moved into the private sector as a real estate tax consultant based in Lake and Porter Counties, and became a founding partner of Innovative Property Tax Solutions. His baritone voice enhanced many chorale groups, including the Princeton Glee Club, Bloomington Chamber Singers, Indianapolis Symphonic Choir, Northwest Indiana Symphony Orchestra Chorus, the Apollo Chorus of Chicago and several church choirs. He was a member of several vestry boards in various Episcopal Church parishes, and was a communicant of St. Andrew' Episcopal Church in Valparaiso, Indiana. He is survived by his parents, Ernest and Marilee Hume, his wife, Linda Richards, four stepchildren and three grandchildren, and a host of grieving relatives and friends. A funeral mass will be held at St. Andrew's Church on Saturday, May 9, 2015, at 2:00 PM, followed by a reception at the church. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Trinity Episcopal Music Fund, 111 South Grant Street, Bloomington IN 47408, in memory of Rex D. Hume. MoellerFuneralHome.com

I just learned of Rex's passing today, September 2nd, while perusing the most recent edition of the Indiana Alumni Magazine that arrived today. Although our paths did not cross cross for many years recently, I will always remember working with Rex in politics and government, hanging out a Nick's with martinis, and enjoying many pleasant meals and times together. You all have my deep sympathy.

I knew Rex as a fellow member of the Apollo Chorus of Chicago. I don't know many people in the chorus well, but Rex was always a person I felt comfortable with, happy to see, and who always warmed my heart with his kind, genuine, gentle nature. He was a wonderful man. I wish his family peace at this difficult time.

Rex Hume was the husband of a co-worker of mine at Indiana U. Northwest, Linda Richards. He and Linda graciously opened their home for department parties. Rex loved talking about music and singing and radiated an energetic approach to whatever he was doing. May peace be with you, Linda, from Mary and Wayne Russell

Rex was my go to friend for tax information when
I was assessor. We were on different sides but he knew the rules. Sometimes I would ask him for the Readers Digest version. he will be missed.
