Eugene Collins Obituary

Eugene "Gene" Collins made his angelic transition unexpectedly in his sleep on the day of our Lord and Savior March 20, 2021. Gene was born in Indianola, MS on January 21, 1937. He was the second child born to Eugene Collins, Sr. and Savannah Collins. Gene matriculated to Gary, IN with his family as a young child. He also made his faithful commitment to Christ as a young man. Gene was preceded in death by both of his parents, sister, Ludella Mosley, and brother, Ira Collins. He was also preceded in death by lifelong friends, Cecil Johnson and Percy Tyler. Gene was a proud graduate of Roosevelt High School class of 1955. He also attended Indiana University where he studied Accounting and Business Services. Gene retired from US Steel after 40 years of dedicated service as a Supervisor. During his tenure at US Steel, Gene served on the USS Credit Union Board for many years where he was committed to ensuring that members of his community were treated equitably by his peers. Gene was also a lifetime member of St. John Missionary Baptist Church, where he served faithfully for many years and was awarded the title of Deacon Emeritus. Gene is survived by his devoted wife of 64 years, Sudia Fears Collins, sons Carlton (Baltimore, MD), Eugene Collins, III (Kimberly), Gallatin, TN; grandchildren Carlton Jr. (Michelina), Chase Collins, Eugene Collins, IV (Crystal), Glendolyn Brinkley, Chloe Collins, Dai Brinkley, and Lindsay Collins, great grandchildren Aden Braziel and Easton Collins. He will always be endeared by his best friend, Ollie Barnes of Phoenix, AZ, and God Daughter Leticia Payton of Gary, IN. He also is survived by a host of nieces and nephews, extended family and dear church members. Services for Eugene Collins will be performed on March 27, 2021 at St. John Baptist Church, 2457 Massachusetts Street, Gary, IN 46407. Visitation 9:00am to 11:00am, with the funeral to follow immediately afterward. Masks will be required, and social distancing rules will be followed.

Mr. COLLINS was my next door neighbor over 50 years he was family. We have a special neighborhood. We all look out for one another. Take care of each other. Celebrate the holidays with each other.
