Lyle Plumhoff, 67, of Rochester, passed away peacefully on Friday, June 30, 2017, at his home.

Lyle was born in 1949 in Fairmont, Minn., to Harold and Luella Plumhoff. He spent his childhood on the family farm near Welcome, Minn. He graduated from Sherburn High School, attended Augsburg College, and went on to receive his associates degree from Inver Grove Heights Community College. Lyle and Beth were married in 1972. They lived in Minneapolis and Spring Valley and raised their family in Rochester.

Lyle worked as a union carpenter and as a building official for Olmsted County. He was a member of the International Association of Building Officials and the American Society of Home Inspectors. He enjoyed woodworking, listening to blues music, attending concerts, and organizing neighborhood outings. Lyle also loved working on home projects, fly fishing, and gardening, especially his rose garden. He was an honest, kind, and caring family man, and a great humanitarian.

Lyle is survived by his loving wife, Beth; sons, Will (Greta) of Missoula, Mont., and Graham (Laura) of Minneapolis; grandchild, Sayer; brother, Russell (Barb); sisters, Marlene and Nancy; and mother-in-law, Betty.

Lyle was preceded in death by his daughter, Addie; parents, Harold and Luella; and by his stepfather-in-law, Merlyn.

A celebration of Lyle's life will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, July 8, at the First Unitarian Universalist Church, 1727 Walden Lane SW, Rochester. Visitation will be held from 1 p.m. until the time of the service.

Judi & Dan Mersel

July 7, 2017

Judi & I first met Lyle shortly after moving to Rochester in 1986. We met a warm, caring, fun loving man. It was easy to be a friend of his. What probably had the most impact on our family was our vacation we took with Lyle's family and other good friends to Hayward, Wi. It was there on Round Lake where our then teenage daughter met a young man she would later marry.

As our families matured we would continue our relationship, sometimes intermittently, but always finding it easy to reconnect. With Lyle's interest in hockey we once took advantage of flying in a small plane to Eveleth for the annual preseason Gopher men's hockey game. Even if we hadn't seen each other for a while, we would always seem to talk about how much fun we had going to Eveleth.

As time passed, we saw less of Lyle but memories of him and his family always found a way to sporadically occur in our own family's discussions.

Many years had passed before I last saw Lyle. I think it may have been five or six years ago when we were both at work. He had come to conduct an inspection of the building where I was working. It felt good to seem him after so long a hiatus because it was the same old Lyle ... a very nice man, with a smile and a mustache, with a big heart. That's the way we'll always remember him.

Judi and I would like to express our sympathy and condolences to Beth, Will and Graham.
