He served in many battles and received his one year continuous active combat award. His division continued through Germany and Austria. After victory in Europe, he was assigned to the Pacific Theater and the invasion of Japan. While on a troop ship, war ended with the two atomic bombs dropped on Japan. He was then assigned to a policing effort in Japan for the rest of his tour of duty. On October 18, 2012, Elroy was sponsored by Cathy (Schneider) (Konen) Ruebl for Old Glory Honor Flight to Washington DC, WWII Memorial. It was a trip he remembered well.

He was also a 50 plus year scouting committee member in the Kettle Moraine and Bay Lakes councils having received the "Silver Beaver" and the St. George awards . Elroy loved the outdoors and vacationed and deer hunted at the three family "Boars Nest" property south of Rhinelander. He hunted until age 98 with many deer racks hanging in his basement office. He played league golf at Hickory Hills until age 99 and retired from league bowling at age 90.
Elroy lived life to the fullest, taking advantage of every opportunity to enjoy family and friends. He thoroughly enjoyed his civic organizations, the outdoors, golf, ice fishing and sturgeon spearing. He was especially grateful that he and his beloved Jean were able to see much of the United States together. We will miss Elroy.
