Mary Davies Obituary

Mary Lou (Macomber) Davies

Appleton - Mary Lou (Macomber) Davies, formerly of New Lisbon, Wisconsin, passed away on June 15, 2018. She was 80 years old.

Mary Lou Davies grew up in New Lisbon before moving to Appleton, Wisconsin with husband John (Jack) Davies, where they raised their family. Mary Lou taught kindergarten in the Appleton Public Schools for 30-plus years, instilling in her students a love for life, learning, and other people. She taught them how to tie shoes, share, make friends, sing silly songs, and find wonder and discovery every day. To know Mary Lou was to admire her enthusiasm, sheer energy, and optimism in the face of adversity. Despite a series of debilitating strokes in her early 40s, Mary Lou returned to teaching until age 52, and continued to enjoy the many activities she loved: fun with family and friends, church activities, travel in the United States and abroad, sailing, hiking, and many others.

Following their retirement, Mary Lou and Jack sold their Appleton residence, and travelled extensively for 15 years in their recreational vehicle, visiting family and friends across the country, fulfilling their life-long love of learning and volunteering with SOWERS (Servants on Wheels Ever Ready - a Christian Couples Ministry).

They returned to the New Lisbon/Mauston area to be near their extended family and to care for Jack's mother, Thelma (Babe) Davies-Treml.

As Mary Lou's health declined, Jack was her constant and devoted care-giver. They moved to Colorado in 2012 to live near their daughters. Most recently, Mary Lou lived with Jack at Gardens on Quail in Arvada, Colorado.

Mary Lou Davies will be missed by her many loving family members and friends. She is survived by husband Jack, children Susan Davies (husband William Beagle), Patricia Watkins Davies (husband Evan Watkins), and Kurt Davies (wife Ta Davies); and six grandchildren. Friends from Appleton - particularly from Memorial Presbyterian Church where Mary and Jack were members for several decades - stayed in touch with cards and phone calls. This brought her great joy. Our family is grateful for your friendship and devotion to our Mom.

I have such fond memories of Mrs Davies. She was my very first teacher in 1975. I was a shy little girl and she and her wonderful spirit boosted me up. I remember her colorful clothes and big smile. I was outside and thought of her today, so came in and found this site. My condolences to all who loved her ❤

Patty was a good friend all through school. Mrs. Davies was our Girl Scout leader for many of those years. She believed in us and allowed us to be ourselves. She is a big part of who I am today.

By far the shining light that instilled in us that kindness is free and it and wins in the end. She has forever been an influence on my childhood into my adult years, and will surely be missed. She knew our entire family, and taught us as children the intangibles in life. My mother and her shared a special bond during those years that have never been forgotten and are frequently reminisced. Forever cherished in our memories, the stories we have will continue for generations.

Mrs. Davies was my kindergarten teacher too. 42 years later - her students remember her for a reason - she was just wonderful. My thoughts and prayers are with you.

She was one of the most amazing teachers to have walked this earth! She taught me how to tie my shoes and I love that was part of her obituary! I remember the rocket ship in her classroom, the turtle shells of my grandfather's that she asked to keep, the baby chicks in the corner incubator, the milk carton plants on the window sill...I remember what a giving and kind woman she was. One who welcomed everyone. I remember as her student, being invited to her house for lunch (hotdogs) and if I remember accurately, canoeing! Back in the day when teachers were allowed to be part of their students' lives without it being weird. I literally was just thinking about her the other day and wondering how she was doing. This brings me such sadness yet floods me with some terrific first memories of school. My wish is that all children can have their first school experience be as positive as Mrs. Davies gave each of her students! Everyone deserves to have a teacher like that at least once in their lifetime. God Bless the Davies Family. This is an incredible loss.

Mary Lou and I were childhood friends and shared many good times together singing and laughing with our friends in New Lisbon. Our friendship continued though out the years and we stayed in touch until recently when they moved to Colorado to be near their family. Rest in Peace dear Mary. Tho'ts and prayers to Jack and family.I will be making a donation to the New Lisbon Library in Mary's name. The world lost an incredible woman this week! Yes, she could - and did - teach so many of us about what life should be. But she also thought she could play bridge with us! She made a gallant attempt as did all of us "Gorens Goons." What superb memories we have of this ever so strong woman among us.

Jack, our many prayers are for you, Kurt, Susan and Patty. Be your strong selves, following your Mary's example.

God's blessings and so much love....

Mrs. Davies was my kindergarten teacher. I was in the first class she taught. Then my daughter Amy had her for kindergarten the year Mrs. Davies retired. I was a very shy and timid little girl, and she helped me so much.As an adult, our path's crossed again as I was one of her nurses during her health issue. She was a gentle, kind, caring women who made a huge and significant impact in my life.Rest in peace.
