LEONARD SCHWARTZ Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on May 13, 2010.
SCHWARTZ LEONARD, MD
Age 84, after a short illness, on Tuesday, May 11, 2010. Born July 10, 1925, to Jeannette Harris and Harry Schwartz. Raised in the Hill District, Len joined the Navy as a Seabee in Saipan in World War II. He graduated from the University of Pittsburgh Medical School and Pittsburgh Psychoanalytic Institute. He was a Psychiatrist in private practice, Chief of Psychiatry at Montefiore Hospital, an Associate Professor of Psychiatry at University of Pittsburgh Medical School. Len met the love of his life, Millie Bernstein, through his cousin Jean Beck as a teenager. They were married for 56 years until her death in 2002. Beloved father of Debbie (Keith) Bailey and Jodi (Rick) Lindner. Beloved grandfather of Jeremy (Anna Dypold) Bailey, Laura Bailey, Ryan and Michael Lindner. Brother-in-law of the late Sylvia (Irving) Cort and Bea (Julius) Grumet. Uncle of Bruce (Lisa) Cort, David (Susan) Cort, Richard (Janet) Cort, Mark (Maureen) Grumet, Bob (Judy) Grumet and great nieces and nephews. Beloved friend of Jean and Saul Chosky, Fred and the late Esther Marks, Pete and Willy Stadjuhar, Richard and Alice Kalla, Dr. Emil Trellis, Tom Auble and many others whom he revered and appreciated. Beloved cousin of Hilda Friedman, Michael (Elaine) Chosky and Amy (Joe) Cohn and others. Len possessed a keen mind which was often playful, original and highly empathetic. In his late fifties, he developed the Heavyhands system of exercise, published two popular books and patented a strapped hand weight, which became a standard in whole body aerobics training. Over his busy lifetime he taught himself to play classical guitar and carve stone sculpture, was a dedicated photographer, wrote humorous and serious poetry, developed psychological theories, and traveled the world promoting and teaching his exercise concepts. Living near their children and grandchildren, he and Millie treasured all of them for their unique qualities. He was a fun and adored grandfather who was willing to be silly or serious, became interested in anything his grandchildren were drawn to, and spent countless hours conversing with, mentoring, playing catch with, and teaching exercises to his grandchildren. He was a devoted fan of grandson Michael's band 28 North, working out to their CD every day until illness made it impossible. Gifted at friendship, he was charming, funny and gentle with all he encountered. He will be missed by all who knew him. Services at RALPH SCHUGAR CHAPEL, INC., 5509 Centre Ave., Shadyside on Thursday at 1 PM. Visitation one hour prior to services, (12 Noon - 1 PM). Interment Beth Shalom Cemetery. Contributions may be made to Forbes Hospice, 115 South Neville Street, Pittsburgh, PA 15213.

I came upon this unfortunate news while searching for Dr. Schwartz on the internet. I bought his book "Heavyhands" when it first came out in the early 80's and the information it contained along with Dr. Schwartz' personal example have been an inspiration to me all these years. Truly a man who left the world better than he found it.

Condolences,
Tim Cartmell
