GYEKIS GEORGE "PETE"
On Monday, November 26, 2007, George "Pete" Gyekis died peacefully at his home of natural causes after ninety six years of productive, independent living. He had an over 60 year career in commercial construction in Pittsburgh. He worked at the Limbaugh Company, starting as a teenager, then started his own business: Miller, Thomas, Gyekis Inc., He was active in the Home Builders Association of Pittsburgh, and was widely recognized as the region's expert in roofing and architectural sheet metal work. He was the tenth and youngest child of Henry and Gisella Gyekis, who immigrated from Hungary to the United States in 1903 and 1904 respectively. Born on June 18, 1911, Pete, as he was known by all, grew up in North Side, Pittsburgh. He lived in North Hills, Fox Chapel and finally in Bellevue at the time of his passing. He was married first to Cathy "Kitty" Eckert, then to Peggy Gerwig and finally to Dorothy Friend, all now deceased. He is survived by three children, Gary Gyekis, living in Spring Mills, PA with his wife Loanne Snavely, Tally (Gyekis) Allen, who lives in Mills River, NC with husband William "Woody" Allen and Victoria (friend) Lind, who lives in Meridian, Idaho, with husband Scott Lind, as well as six grandchildren. His humor, generosity and insight will be missed by all who knew him, friends, acquaintances and family. For information about the memorial gathering for Pete Gyekis on Saturday, Dec. 8, call 412-321-0495. In lieu of flowers, please send a tax deductible contribution to one of these groups that Pete supported: Waterkeeper Alliance, Humane Society, Planned Parenthood.
