JEROME VEREB Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on May 22, 2019.
VEREB FATHER JEROME MICHAEL

Son of the late Joseph Vincent and Helen Larner Vereb. He was born in 1945 in Lakehurst, New Jersey and grew up in Pittsburgh, PA, where he attended Saint Canice School From 1952-1960, then Holy Cross Seminary in Dunkirk, New York. He entered in Passionist Community in 1965 and professed his vows in 1966. He was ordained in 1972. He was educated in Passionist Monastic Seminary, Saint John's University, Union Theological Seminary; New York and Oxford University in England. Father Jerome served as a representative for the World Council of Churches in Geneva, Switzerland. As an ecumenist, he worked closely with Rev. Dr. Billy Graham as they shared many important assignments together. He earned his Doctorate degree from Angelicum University in Rome. Throughout the pontificate of Saint John Paul II, he served the Holy See in various positions. In 1987, he coordinated John Paul II's visit to the United States in Columbia, South Carolina. He served as a member of the Secretariat for Christian Unity and Spiritual Director at the North American College in Rome. He was also Rector of Holy Family Monastery in Hartford, Connecticut: Vicar of the Diocese of Venice, FL; Secretary to Cardinal Silvestrini and Dean of the Graduate School at Immaculate Conception Seminary in New York. He served as co-producer for the Sunday Televised Mass Broadcast from New York City where many famous actors and actresses actively participated in the liturgy. He has also written and edited eleven books. With the late Patti Burns, News Anchor at KDKA TV, Father had traveled to the Vatican to meet with the Pope. The coverage of that trip won an Emmy Award. More recently, he had provided commentary on local radio WAOB and on Vatican and KDKA TV, Pittsburgh. Father Jerome had many wonderful attributes, but his greatest gift was his unique and magnetic appeal that touched the inner being of every man and woman regardless of status. Friends received Thursday and Friday May 23 and 24, 2019 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. at St. Paul's Monastery Chapel and Mass of Christian Burial Saturday St. Paul's Monastery Church, May 25, 2019 at 10 a.m.

Memories of Father Jerome still regularly come to mind when I reflect about his kind patience especially in the confessional . I was incredibly blessed to know him as well as to have Father Jerome minister to me in my many needs. I am still praying for him daily especially for his intercession for our Church , world and my personal journey. May God and Our Lord Jesus grant Father Jerome Eternal Rest.

Fr Vereb was a most generous man of Spirit. He gave me a second home at Holy Family Monastery that provided me great enrichment as a newly ordained.

I helped him learn how to drive. His motivation?
I want to use my dad's old car and help my mother do grocery shopping.

Simple, beautiful. Just like Marty.

It is hard to believe that it is almost a year since the departure of Father Jerome for eternity and his glory in Heaven. I still pray for him and to him each day for repose and intercession. Father Jerome's Christ like demeanor is so desperately needed in our world today. Father Jerome, please pray for us. Michael Bercik

To the Passionist Community and the family of Father Jerome Vereb, it is hard to believe a special man, who was so close to Our Lord Jesus and with so much to offer a world in dire need of spiritual direction, has left us so soon. Father Jerome was kind and understanding to me at a critical time of my life. I will never forget him and always pray for him.
Sincerely,
Michael J. Bercik

To Father Vereb's Family and Friends,
I offer you our deepest sympathies on Fr Marty's passing. He brought much comfort to my mom and dad when they were in failing health and to our entire family. He was so kind, gentle and caring to all. Even though he traveled far and had much success he always remembered his Knoxville neighbors and fellow Canician's. May he rest in peace and may Perpetual Light shine upon him.

My deepest sympathy to Fr. Jerome's family and his Passionist family. I knew Fr. Jerome most of my life and he was truly an inspiration to all whom he met. Rest in peace Fr. Jerome, I know you are with the saints and blesseds in heaven and most of all your dear parents. God Bless, Patty

His voice brought so many comfort, his soul brought a light to the world we all shared through the grace he has shown throughout his life. We all knew growing up Marty was not an ordinary Canician kid... so much more special than we could have ever imagined as he grew up to be Father Jerome. He will continue to be busy doing the work he dedicated his life to - watching over all of us. I am not sure who was smiling more Marty when he walked into heaven, or God, when He welcomed him in.

May 22, 2019

Rest in peace, Marty. I'm proud to have known you as a family friend and fellow "Canicean". Thank you for your love and devotion for your lifelong friends, including our beloved Michael. I'm sure those that have passed welcomed you with open arms.

I had the pleasure of meeting Fr. Vereb many years ago when he stayed at St. Luke's Church in Carnegie. He was very personable, humorous, and truly a Holy man. May he rest in Peace.
