ARNOWITT
YOUNG IN
Passed away Nov. 10, 2016, at the age of 86, at her home in Pittsburgh, PA. Born Young In Rhee in Seoul, Korea, she grew up under the Japanese occupation of Korea, and entered Yonsei University as a member of the first class to include women. Several years after the end of the Korean War, Young In became the first person in her family to move to the United States. She pursued graduate studies in physics at Syracuse University where she met Richard Arnowitt. They were married in 1959 and spent 55 loving years together, living in Lexington, MA and College Station, TX. Together they raised two sons, and enjoyed many years of sharing their interests in art, music, theater, cooking, travel, and science. Young In worked a wide variety of jobs including being an administrator at Northeastern University and at the Superconducting Super Collider particle accelerator. She also ran her own business importing Korean ceramic art to the United States, often for sale at numerous art museums. An artist herself, she painted, but her real love was for quilting. She created a number of large quilts in a modern style, sometimes recreating famous works of art by van Gogh, Monet, and Matisse, as well as some more abstract quilt creations. Young In and Richard relished traveling together around the world, including visits to Europe, Asia, Australia, and South America. Some of their memorable trips included enjoying theater in London, art and patisserie in Paris, seeing glaciers in Alaska, and visiting penguins in the wild in South America. She will always be remembered as a brave, intelligent, and loving woman who believed strongly in a world where all were treated equally and who loved sharing the wonders of human and natural creation. Young In is survived by, and will be missed by, her son, Myron Philip Arnowitt and daughter-in-law, Nancy Niemczyk; son, Michael Paul Arnowitt and partner, Therisa Rogers; granddaughter, Margaret Laura "Peggy" Arnowitt; sisters, Young Sun Suh and Young Jean Lee; brother, Young Man Lee; and many other family and friends. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, November 19, 2016, at 4:00 p.m. at the Allegheny Inn, 1010 Cedar Ave., Pittsburgh, PA 15212. Visitation will precede the service and will be at 3:00 p.m. at the Allegheny Inn. The family suggests donations in Young In's name to the Richard L. Arnowitt Endowment for Graduate Student Support. Checks payable to the Texas A&M Foundation (Arnowitt Endowment in memo), College of Science, 520 Blocker, 3257 TAMU, College Station, TX 77843-3257.
