Richard Kleinhenz Obituary

Richard L. Kleinhenz

Wappingers Falls - Richard Kleinhenz passed away June 20, 2018 at Vassar Brothers Medical Center in Poughkeepsie, following an intense five-year struggle with multiple myeloma. My husband of 41 years was extraordinary in so many ways. He was born in Germany, educated there and at Atlantic College in Wales, and originally came to the U.S. to study for one year while working towards a graduate degree in mathematics in Germany. After receiving his doctorate from SUNY Albany in physics, we moved to Dutchess County and IBM hired him on in East Fishkill to work on silicone wafer design. Rich received many patents for his inventions along the way.

Rich was an avid and skilled photographer and bicyclist. He enjoyed building his own wheels and bikes and repairing others, and he even rode 200 miles in a single day to complete a double century club ride in Albany. He also enjoyed playing the guitar, the flute, and singing. We enjoyed hiking and camping, and we sewed our own sleeping bags, tent, and parkas. Later, his hobbies turned toward making wooden objects, starting with creating a beautiful birch-strip canoe, and progressing to an interest in pen making, which he enjoyed for many years. Asked to author a book on the subject, The Penturner's Bible was the result. Most recently, he'd gotten very involved with building and flying radio-controlled aircraft with a pair of local flying clubs, which has given him immense satisfaction. Finally, he accomplished his goals of travel to South America and also one last trip together with his family, a tour in Iceland, from which we returned only last week.

My brilliant, creative, talented, and loving husband is survived by his six siblings in Germany, his wife Linda at home, and our son Robby in Tokyo. To honor his memory, please direct any donations to Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center or the Multiple Myeloma Research Foundation.

I am extremely sorry to learn of Richard Kleinhenz's passing. I got into penturning in no small part because of Rich. In the beginning I bought a few pens from him. I was excited by what he made for me and decided to get into the craft myself. I admired his analytical intellect and his drive to energize the penturning community. He created the Penturner's Guild of which I am still a member. He will be remembered and missed.

I will always remember meeting Rich in person for the first time in Provo, Utah at the Penturners Rendevous. Years ago we had corresponded via email as Rich had asked me to make name badges for those attending the Rendevous. I was excited to meet this man in person after our interactions. My wife and I arrived late and as we walked in Rich practically ran over to us to introduce himself. His smile immediately engaged my interest and I knew instantly this was a very special person. We lost touch with each other after Rich handed over the arrangements for the Rendevous to Kurt Hertzog. But in 2016 I sent Rich another email just to catch up with him. He told me about his fight with cancer and I was so sad to hear about it.. Shortly thereafter I was also diagnosed with cancer, Renal Cell Carcinoma. Knowing Rich was fighting his battle encouraged me to fight my own with the same vigor I knew Rich would be fighting.

I will grieve his loss, the vast knowledge he so willingly shared, and his outstanding ability to impart that knowlege to any who asked. RIP my friend. Your memory will remain inspirational and you are truly missed.

Hi Linda and Robby,
Whenever I touch a piece of wood especially a small piece I think of Rich. "This would make a nice pen" I gave Rich a big round piece of cherry burl I found in the woods, not sure if it ever became a pen or not? We worked together for many many years on leading edge technology but the discussion always returned to "shop talk". Which band saw was best, which saw blade lasted longest. I was amazed at watching his shop become reality. He was an inspiration to me.

I have known Rich and Linda since 2012 when they became my host parents. They welcomed me with open arms and always made me feel special. They did their best to teach and make the culturally lost international freshman I was get used to the American lifestyle. What I admired the most about Rich was his joy to live ans his passion for robots/mechanics. He will be missed and forever loved. My sincerest condolences to you Linda and Robby.

This news about Rich gives me a heavy heart - so sorry to hear, I wasn't aware of his condition.
Rich's pure enthusiasm for our model airplane sport/hobby/obsession was always a wonderful addition to all ModelMaster activities.
He was one of the first people I got to know in the ModelMasters club and the HV RC Society and we always had great conversations.
He really represented all that is good about our club and the RC world.
So interesting to hear all of his interests, here, I was unaware of.
May he rest in Peace...
