Paul Stuewer Obituary

Paul R. Stuewer

POUGHKEEPSIE - Paul Stuewer, 51, passed away peacefully on October 5, 2016, surrounded by his loving family. Born on May 17, 1965 in Poughkeepsie, NY to Hans and Mary Stuewer, Paul graduated from Roy C. Ketcham High School in 1983, and attended Dutchess Community College.

Paul entered the New York State Police on September 26, 1990, as a member of the 168th Session of the Basic School, and served with the State Police for 26 years. He served as a trooper in Troop K until his appointment to Investigator in 2004. In 2005, he was promoted to Sergeant, and remained an Investigator in his most recent assignment with the New York City Drug Enforcement Task Force.

Investigator Stuewer passed away from an illness stemming from his assignment at the World Trade Center site, following the terrorist attack on September 11, 2001. Following the events of that day, Investigator Stuewer was assigned to New York City to aid in the search and recovery efforts.

Paul loved being a Trooper, and was active in many extra assignments with the NYSP, including motorcycle detail, Camaro operator, the Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Unit, and served as one of the models for the original State Trooper statue, "The Grey Rider," in Albany, NY.

Paul is survived by his wife, Sheila, parents Mary and Hans Stuewer, children Samantha, Lexi, and Christian Stuewer, and stepsons Christopher, Dennis, and Brendan Hall, all of Poughkeepsie, NY. He was predeceased by his sister, Catherine Gary, and is survived by his brother-in-law, Michael Gary, and nephews Devin, Brendan, and Timothy Gary of Tucson, AZ. Paul is also survived by an aunt, Josephine O'Neill of Kilrush, County Clare, Ireland, an uncle Senan Hartney, of Reading, England, as well as numerous cousins in Germany, Ireland, Australia, Canada, and England. Other family include sisters-in-law Maureen Ferguson, Rory (and Michael) Keough, Peggy (and Jamie) Prendergast, and brother-in-law Patrick (and Leslie) Ferguson, as well as many nephews and extended family.

In his free time, Paul was an accomplished wood carver, and was past-President of the Hudson Valley Woodcarvers. He enjoyed blacksmithing, and was a member of the TiYogi Archery Club. Paul loved the outdoors, especially walking his dogs, Dolly and Abby.

The family wishes to thank the doctors, nurses, and staff of Vassar Medical Center, as well as the many colleagues and dear friends who lent support and prayers during Paul's illness. They will be forever grateful for the support provided by all the members of the New York State Police, the DEA and the Drug Enforcement Task Force.

Visitation will be held at William G. Miller & Son Funeral Home, 371 Hooker Ave., Poughkeepsie, NY, 12603 on Tuesday, October 11, 2016, from 4-8pm. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Martin de Porres Church, 118 Cedar Valley Road, Poughkeepsie, NY 12603, at 10:30am, on Wednesday, October 12, 2016.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to NYSPIA Emergency Assistance Fund, 54 State Street, Suite 300, Albany, NY 12207 or online at www.NYSPIAEAF.com. If you wish to send an online condolence please visit our website at www.wmgmil lerfuneralhome.com

Many woodcarvers around the Northeast knew Paul, his dad, and his son from their attendance at the Woodcarvers' Retreat in Rhode Island over the Columbus Day Weekend every year. Paul was always very active there and chatted with everyone. One of his standard duties was to take up a collection to give a tip to the kitchen staff who always fed everyone so well and no one tried to escape when he was collecting.
We had found out about his passing just before our gathering this year. We had printed the announcement from the NYSP and posted it, and as people arrived on Friday everyone became aware. No one there had known of his illness, and just last year he appeared vibrantly healthy. As a result, after the initial sadness wore off, it seemed like he was very much with us for the balance of the weekend. Stories were shared about him by the leaders, the attendees, and facility staff, and everyone was consoled by their best memories of him. We will miss him and keep him in our memories for a long time.

Our sympathies to Shiela and the rest of the family.

Aunt Mary and Uncle Hans. I wish I could take away your pain with Paul's passing.

TOGETHERNESS
Death is nothing at all. I have only
slipped away into the next room.
Whatever we were to each other,
we still are. Call me by my old
familiar name. Speak to me in the
same easy way you always have.
Laugh as we always laughed at the
little jokes we enjoyed together.
Play, smile, think of me, pray for me.
Life means all that it ever meant.
It is the same as it always was.
There is absolute unbroken continuity.
Why should I be out of your mind
because I am out of your sight? I am
But waiting for you, for an interval,
somewhere very near, just around
the corner.
All is well. nothing is past. Nothing
has been lost. One brief moment
and all will be as it was before --
only better. Infinitely happier. We
will be one, together forever.

Please accept my deepest condolence. I had the opportunity of working with Paul in the days following 911. He truly was a troopers trooper. Paul had a wonderful friendly and caring personality peppered with a great sense of humor. I remember conversations with Paul about how deeply he cared for his family. I'm sure this loss is devastating to all of you. My thoughts and prayers are with you.

My prayers and condolences for the family. 911 was a traumatic event for all of us, but the aftermath was grueling for those at ground zero. The smell and confusion were unbelievable. Thank you, Paul for your service and devotion.

My deepest condolences to Sheila, children, family and friends. I know you don't know who I am, but I worked with Paul at Modjeski & Masters as a Draftsman a long time ago. We had a great time together especially when he used me as his self defense play toy. This was before he even thought of becoming a State Trooper. Will Miss You ! Rest In Peace !
