Morty was very kind to me eventhough he wouldn't publish any of my poems. He was right not to publish them. I was just beginning to write back then. He was honest and devoted to his work.

I'll never forgot Morty Sclar, whom I knew for just one semester at the University of Iowa. He was a fine poet. What I admired about him--and also feared--was his truth-telling. He taught me some lessons about myself in one short session that have lasted with me a lifetime. Rest in Peace Morty.

Although I met Morty only once--when I interviewed him for my biography about Isabella Gardner, a poet-mentor he loved--I'll always remember how kind he was.
