Lawrence Almy Obituary

Lawrence (Larry) Almy
originally from Hillcrest
God's faithful servant, Lawrence William Almy, was taken to his eternal home on February 13, 2009. He is predeceased by his wife, Elizabeth Agnes Almy; his daughter, Helen Regina Almy; his parents, Arnold William and Regina Margaret Almy, Hillcrest, N.Y.; his brothers, David Almy, Port Crane, N.Y., Paul Almy, Fort Collins, Colo.; his sisters, Mary Louise McGlynn, Kissimmee, Fla., and Catherine Almy, Binghamton, N.Y. He will be missed by his children, Mary Elizabeth Coté, Newark, Del., David Lawrence, Hopkinton, Mass., Michael William, Binghamton, and Thomas Jerome, Leesburg, Fla.; and by his grandchildren, Christopher (son of Thomas), Jessica, Kevin (children of David), Amy, Sharon, Angela, Joseph (children of Thomas), and Nicholas (son of Michael). He will also be missed by his seven great-grandchildren, Zachary, Meggan, Gavyn, Madeleine, Jadon, Billy, and Kimber Lynn. Lawrence leaves behind his sisters, Rita Holtslander and Ruth Jump, both of Port Crane, Jean Miles, Citrus Springs, Fla., Leona Booth, Yucaipa, Calif., and Joanne Mandic, Dunellen, Fla. Lawrence was born in Binghamton, N.Y., in December, 1917. He grew up in Hillcrest, where he was one of the first altar boys of St. Catherine Church. He married Elizabeth on May 19, 1941, and they lived for many years in Port Crane and Harpursville, N.Y. During this time, Lawrence was an active member of St. Joseph's Parish in Sanitaria Springs, N.Y., serving as a Trustee for many years and being a member of the Knights of Columbus. He worked for 42 years as a Design Engineer with Link Aviation (Singer, Inc.). He loved his work and during that time went on numerous business trips. Larry and Betty moved to Citrus Springs, Fla., where they enjoyed being part of the praying community of St. Elizabeth Ann Seaton parish. A year after the death of Betty, Larry lived at The Grand Court in Tavares, Fla. For the last four months, he lived at Hillside Center in Wilmington, Del. From the time he was a teenager, he loved kayaking in the Binghamton, New York area and became well-known for his love of boating. He and his best friend, Harold Griffin, built a 17' sailboat in Lawrence's home garage, bending the planks and hand planing the mast. After sailing for many years on Lake Cayuga and the St. Lawrence River, that boat was followed by three others. He shared his love with others through his work in the Power Squadron.
A Mass of Resurrection will be offered at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, February 17, 2009, at St. Joseph's Church, Sanitaria Springs. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery, Johnson City, N.Y. The family will receive friends at the Osterhoudt-Madden Funeral Home, 69-71 Maple Street, Harpursville, on Monday, February 16, 2009, from 5 to 7 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Joseph's Parish or St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Parish.
