Leonard Glosenger Obituary

Glosenger, Leonard

It is with a heavy heart we share with you the passing of our beloved Leonard "Poppy" Glosenger. Born August 2nd, 1926 in Wayne County, PA to Robert and Verna Mills Glosenger, he died August 10th, 2013 in Johnson City, NY battling heart disease and diabetes. He was predeceased by both parents and his late wife, Elizabeth "Betty" Eberhardt Glosenger; his big sister, Rosalie Clavez (1999); and two elder brothers, Robert Glosenger (1980) and Tisdel Glosenger (1998). He is survived by his loving companion and best friend of 32 years, Helen Farrell; his sons, Mark Glosenger (Lorraine), Jeff Glosenger (Lisa), and Peter Glosenger; grandchildren, Jason Glosenger (Nicole), Kristen Glosenger Rice (Greg), Ben Glosenger, Jed Glosenger, Nicole Bliznik (Anthony), Magen West and Josh Glosenger; and great-granddaughter, Harper Joy. He is also survived by his brothers, Gerald Glosenger and Bruce Glosenger (Katie); sister-in-law, Christine Sypniewski; and several nieces and nephews, including Sara Clavez (Judith), Rosalie Clavez Berger (Mike), Jannette Clavez Goodpastor (David), Debbie (Frank) Kennedy (Frank), Mark Kennedy (Gina), Patricia Shulze (Bill), Jane Krebbeks, Diane McQuade and Sharron Woodruff, and so many more - he loved them all. The family would like to take this opportunity to thank Leonard's physician Dr. Gary Dean for many years of superb care. Leonard attended the One Room School of Smith Hill-Carley Brook and attended Honesdale HS Class of 1943; after graduation he enlisted in the US Army 102nd division and served his country honorably as Staff Sargent Infantry in Nuremberg, Germany. Upon return from the military he continued his education by enrolling in NY's Institute of Applied Arts and Science, presently known as BCC. After college he took a job with Link Aviation and then moved to IBM where he was employed as a Quality Control Specialist, retiring after 28 years. In retirement he focused on a lifelong passion - rehabilitating the family farm he was born in, loving to puzzle out all the many projects there. Poppy often remarked "that he was so busy in retirement he couldn't figure out how he had ever found time to work". In retirement he became a member of the Wayne County Beekeepers Association, another lifelong passion. Leonard was also very lucky later in life to have the love and support of the Farrell Kennedy Family, whose activities and warm relationship enriched his life on a daily basis. We mourn the loss of our Poppy/Leonard/Dad and wish for all who knew him to join us at Hessling Funeral Home, Inc., 428 Main St., Honesdale, PA for a Celebration of Life on Thursday, August 15th, from 11 to noon, when there will be a memorial service. A burial with military honors will follow in St. John's Cemetery. Immediately following, please join us for a luncheon at Cordaro's Restaurant to continue reminiscing and sharing fond memories. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to The American Heart Association, The American Diabetes Foundation, or a charity of your choice.

I wrote this for Kristen the day Poppy passed. In the short but memorable time I knew him he was inspiring. I loved when he spoke in poems. I read this to Kristen that evening and she loved it. So I'll share it here. Hope you like it.

He had a gift you could say that made us all smile,
A true man with words, that made it all worthwhile.

The rhymes and deep meanings, in which the stories he told,
Helped Poppy with the moment, it could all unfold.

You couldn't help smile, and listen with amaze,
The lyrics flowed from his mouth, without a hiccup, or stumbled phrase.

The hurt and the grief is all we know now,
We forget Poppy's influence, purpose, later pain he endowed.

You can't help it read these words in his voice or his tone,
He now tells these poems and rhymes to angels at home.

They all laugh now, and smile these friends from above,
His pain, and suffering, has turned to a dove.

Poppy's healed, happy, and taught us all a good lesson,
He now teaches above, smiles, and makes them all laugh in heaven.

God Bless you and keep you in his arms Leonard. You brought so much joy to my children and our family. There are so many wonderful memories of the farm and the summer camping trips. I pray Jim is there with you and the two of you will finally catch that "Big Turtle". The world will be less joyful without you in it. Be at peace dear Leonard. We will always love you.

What a kind, compassionate, funny, witty, amazing man! His love for my Aunt Helen was beautiful and constant! He will truly be missed. He attended many of my boys' milestones with my Aunt and always had some amazing facts and stories to tell to the guests :-) My parents have since passed but they loved him as family too. He will be missed. Rest in Peace and may memories of Leonard bring comfort and peace to his children and grandchildren and the family he became a loving part of.
Love,
