Evelyn Ida Foote Bowers
of OxfordOn Monday morning, August the 8th, 2005, God called Evelyn Ida Foote Bowers home to dance with the angels. Evelyn was a resident of New York State Veterans Home in Oxford, N.Y. since November, 2002. Evelyn was predeceased by her husband, Richard P. Bowers; a grandson, Brent W. Bowers; and her loving sister and best friend, Helen Frink, Austin, Tex. She is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, Bradford J. and Ellen Bowers, Wayland, N.Y. and Brent F. and Trudi Bowers, Apalachin, N.Y.; a daughter and son-in-law, Joanne and Anthony Skojec, Vestal, N.Y.; five granddaughters, one grandson, one great-grandson, several nieces and nephews; and a sister-in-law, Dorothy Bowers, Golden, Colo. She was born on August 21, 1922 in Norwich, the daughter of Jay W. and Marion Slater Foote. A veteran of WWII, Evelyn served in the Naval Air Force until the end of the war and was very proud of her service. Her service time was spent working on instrument panels of trainer planes as well as guiding the planes in for safe landings. On November 22, 1946 Evelyn married Richard P. Bowers, also of Norwich. She held various long-term jobs at Singer Link, Binghamton, then returning to Norwich working at Cintila which later became the GLA Corp. In 1971, Evelyn and her family moved to Vestal, shortening her husband's longstanding commute and began a 19-year career at Stickley Siver Photo. Evelyn retired in 1991 to begin her most acknowledged venture, providing loving childcare to her two youngest granddaughters as the live-in Grammy. Evelyn will always be remembered for her abundance of friends, generous caring nature, love of music and dancing, strong patriotism and great pride in her family.
A graveside service for close friends and family will be held Thursday, August 11th at 12 p.m. at Vestal Hills Memorial Park Cemetery, with full Military Honors accorded a veteran, the Reverend M. Anthony Seel, Jr., Rector of St. Andrews Episcopal Church, Vestal, will officiate.
