David Averbuck Obituary

David Averbuck
David Averbuck connected with everyone he met. His intellect, humor and sparkling spirit were infectious.
Born in East Los Angeles in 1943, David earned his law degree from the UC Berkeley and went on to focus on labor law and civil rights. He joined with Caesar Chavez to battle for farmworkers' equality and the NFL Players Association to secure players' futures.
David and his wife of 55 years, Patti, lived, worked and traveled around the world. In 1987, they moved to the Russian River and David shared his love of philosophy and ethics as a professor at Sonoma State University.
In 2001 they moved to New Orleans, inspired by its people, food, music and general joie de vivre. David discovered his third career as DJ Jelly Roll Justice at the community-run jazz station, WWOZ.
In his extraordinary life, David transformed from a lawyer telling people's stories, to an educator teaching us to question, to a DJ sharing each person's unique genius.
David was loved by many –his wife Patti and his three children, Alexis, Rachel and Jacob, their spouses, Ryan, Jenny and Carrie, and his six grandchildren, Oren, Redmond, Eva, Timothy, Amias and Simone.

I remember Mr. David Averbuck as a guest speaker in Dr. Levell Holmes' U.S. History class. He was very animated and his voice full of passion while he asserts his point to you.

David taught my final class at Sonoma State University in 1992. What a fantastic human. He is most responsible for my now 27 years as a lawyer. RIP

I thoroughly enjoyed my classes with David on law and social work at UC Berkeley's Graduate School of Social Welfare in the mid-1980's. He was an inspiration for me who, as an attorney, was figuring out how to combine law and social work, with a commitment to social justice. David exemplified the best of both disciplines. His lively mind and dedication to improving the lives of people were always stimulating and uplifting. He was a positive force in the world and will be missed. I feel fortunate to have had him as a teacher.
