Raymond DeMarta Obituary

Passed away on May 11, 2011 at his home. Partner, best friend, and devoted husband of Jaye Larsen of Sonoma. Loving father of Mark DeMarta and his wife, Sonia, of Los Angeles, the late Pamela Lynn DeMarta, and Stacy Larsen and his wife Toni of Petaluma. He is also survived by his granddaughters; Nancy, Michelle, Kimberly, and Savannah, his brother, Robert DeMarta and his wife, Patricia of Fremont, Ingrid DeMarta of Fairfax, and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Barbara DeMarta, and his brother Roy DeMarta. Ray was born in San Francisco May 10, 1933 to Leroy and Eva DeMarta. He graduated from Lowell High School and College of Marin and received his bachelor's degree and teaching credential from San Francisco State University. Ray started his teaching career the opening year of Kenilworth Junior High School in Petaluma where he taught for the next thirty-six years. He was a beloved and respected teacher and colleague to several generations of students and faculty. His ability to relate to everyone, regardless of age, background, or political persuasion made Ray a unique individual. He had an uncanny talent for drawing out people's thoughts and feelings because he listened intently to them. He was a friend to all who knew him because he respected everyone. Students whom he taught remembered him years after being in his class. On one occasion, when Ray and Jaye were on a cruise ship leaving New York, a voice from the crowded deck yelled, "Mr. DeMarta!" It was a former student. As a teacher, that says a lot about who you are. In his spare time, Ray enjoyed participating in a variety of sports, including scuba diving, golf, and especially skiing. He also loved reading, cooking, and music. Ray is remembered, by those who knew him, to be generous, humorous, and a man who celebrated life with a passion. We will all miss his charm, wit, and friendship. He had "a sense of humor and a touch of class." A party will be held in Ray's honor for friends and family on Saturday, May 21, 2011, from 2:00 p.m. until 5:00 p.m. at his home. In his memory, contributions may be made to the Sonoma County Animal Shelter. Family assisted by PARENT-SORENSEN MORTUARY & CREMATORY, 763-4131

Of all the teachers I have had in my life few left as lasting of an impact that Mr.DeMarta! Seventh grade art, photography and yearbook were all great classes. I even student taught with him while in my junior year. I still shoot a lot of pictures and credit Mr. DeMarta for the love of photography. He will be missed but not forgotten.

Ray was the only man who called me a pretty broad and took it as a complement.

I too, am one of Mr. DeMarta's former students. As difficult as junior high was, I found his art class to be a place where I could be myself and enjoy being creative. He was a kind and nurturing educator and will surely be missed by so many whose lives he touched.
My sincerest condolences to Ms. Larsen and the entire DeMarta family.

Sincerely,

Susan (Carr) Collins

I was proud to call Ray DeMarta a friend, mentor, and colleague from our first meeting in the faculty lounge at the old Kenilworth in 1977. I learned from Ray, and yet he always preserved the illusion that he was also learning from me. He was genuinely interested in everyone with whom he came in contact. His engaging and probing questions elicited stories from all of us who knew him. I remember, in particular, several extended conversations among teachers in the faculty lunchroom where he was the catalyst. Ray was about 9 to 13 years old during World War II. By chance, also on the KJHS faculty were two other teachers of approximately his age. Ray had spent the war in San Francisco. The two others I speak of spent those years, one in Munich and one in Tokyo. Those conversations were fascinating, revelatory, and respectful. I felt privileged to be present on those occasions.

I was also privileged to be in attendance with Ray at many celebrations, social gatherings, and parties. The man knew how to enjoy a good time. I loved him, and I'll miss him.

I was really saddened to hear of Mr. DeMarta passing away....he was my art teacher at Kenilworth Jr. High in Petaluma many many years ago (i am now 57) and i never forgot him or the impact he made on my life. Mr. DeMarta was always encouraging, supportive with a great sense of humor. He was one of those humans that always somehow leave an impact on your life no matter how old we become. I feel as tho i have lost a bit of my childhood in reading that he is now gone. He will never be forgotten by me and in sitting here typing this it has taken me back through time and the difference he made to me in my middle school years. I will never ever forget him and my sympathy goes out to his family and friends. He was one wonderful and amazing teacher who impacted my life. <3

I went out to Kenilworth while they were in the process of tearing down the building, I couldn't help but stop by the art room and say hello to Mr. DeMarta even though he hadn't been in the room for a very long time. I'll never forget his wit and his encouragement to all of us in 1973! He touched my heart and my memories in so many ways. God Bless him and his family at this sad time.
