Charles RIVERA Obituary

94, of Petaluma, California passed away peacefully on February 26, 2014. The youngest of three children, Chuck was born to Virginia and Manuel de Rivera on April 10, 1919 in Minneapolis, Minnesota. He spent his formative years in Los Angeles. Chuck moved to San Francisco where he met and then married Wanda Kalinowski in 1940. They had four children, Charles (Chick), Ronald, Diane and Rochelle. He served in the United States Army during World War II in the Pacific Theatre from 1943 until his honorable discharge in early 1946. He was an excellent cabinet maker and opened his own business which served the family well until he decided to become a fireman in 1954. He retired from the Daly City Fire Department in 1982 as a captain. He and Wanda moved to Petaluma in 1971. He was an avid golfer and played on a regular basis until the age of 90. During his playing days not only did he accomplish a feat that eludes many golfers, a hole in one, but he had two and on the same hole at Sonoma National Golf Links. When Wanda passed away in 1996 he met and married Antoinette "Toni" Modrzejewski in 1997. She too preceded him in death from cancer in 2007. He will be greatly missed by his children, Chick, Ron, Diane and Rochelle, his extended family, Mike and Sharon Tournahu, his seven grandchildren, seven great grandchildren, several nieces and nephews and dear friends. The family is grateful to Kaiser Hospital and Hospice of Petaluma for their kind and compassionate care. A special thank you to Julie Hamilton who went beyond the call of duty during Dad's last months. A memorial to celebrate his life will be held on Thursday, March 6, 2014 at 12:00 Noon at the Parent-Sorensen Mortuary and Crematory, 850 Keokuk Street, Petaluma, CA with inurnment at Cypress Hill Memorial Park in Petaluma. In lieu of flowers, it was Dad's wishes that donations be made to Hospice of Petaluma, 416 Payran Street, Petaluma, CA 94952.

I too worked with Captain "Chuck" Rivera in the early days of my career. It was a different time and I was glad to be a part of it. Chuck was old school and he and another Captain Jack Winters "showed me the ropes". Sorry to see him go........

I also worked with Capt. Rivera at the Daly City Fire Department. He was a veteran when I was a rookie in 1972. It was good to work with Chuck, and I always appreciated the legacy the senior firefighters left to the Department. Jackie and I express our condolences to all the family at his passing.

It was my pleasure to escort my dear aunt, Helen Neumann, to your father's wonderful 90th birthday celebration in Petaluma. She so enjoyed seeing him and his family and friends for the last time. This is to let you know she died peacefully April 19th last year in Reno. I know she would be saddened to learn of your father's passing. She and my late Uncle Chuck were long-time friends of both of your parents. May they all rest in peace.

Sincerely,

Julie Wilson

I was hired with Daly City Fire on 04/17/1978. After my 8 weeks of training, I was assigned to "B" Shift at what was at that time station # 7, now called station #94. Captain Rivera was my first Captain, along with E/O George De Bono. I learned many things from two of the department's well seasoned veterans and will never forget either one of them. As a "rookie "fireman" I was treated respectfully and at times shielded from the tyranny and practical joking of others, thanks to Captain Charles (Chuck) Rivera. Many years later after my own retirement from Daly City Fire, I met Ron Rivera, Chuck's son, and now my neighbor in Angels Camp Ca.
As retired B/C John Roy stated, Chuck was a "one of a kind guy" I feel very proud to have not only known him, but to have worked with him before his retirement!
My condolences to the family.

Respectfully,
Retired Captain Michael Vanlandingham

I worked with Chuck at the Daly City Fire Dept for many years. He had a wonderful gimmick at work that he worked to perfection. The Dept's Chief at the time was Elmer Kennedy. He was strictly from the old school that believed everyone should be busy at all times.Chuck would always carry a tape measure. When the Chief came out from his office looking for someone to do some dirty job Chuck would be measuring some item or fixture looking busy like he was building or repairing something. Hell it worked. I know because i got stuck doing some of those jobs. He was one of a kind and a great guy. Condolences to the family.
