George Lima Obituary

LIMA, GEORGE CHARLES SR. 93, of High Street passed away on April 7th at the Rhode Island Veterans Home. Born in Bristol, he was the son of the late Joseph and Mary (Pacheco) Lima. His parents immigrated to the US from Sao Miguel Azores. George was married to the late Emily (Furtado) Lima for fifty years. He is survived by their three children Oryann Lima and her husband Raymond Cordeiro, George Lima Jr. and his wife Bonnie and Frances Dutelle and her husband Raymond. He also leaves behind his nine grandchildren Raymond Dutelle Jr. and his fiancée Cailyn Couto, Alison Miranda and her husband Brent, Nicholas Lima, Matthew Lima, Margaret Lima, Nathaniel Morency, Noah Morency, Hope Morency and Ciara Morency and two great grandchildren Keegan Dutelle and Ella Miranda. He was the brother of Veronica Dionne. George attended Bristol schools and graduated from the Boston School of Anatomy and Embalming in 1951 after which he founded the George C. Lima Funeral Home in 1953. He was proud to serve his country in the US Army during World War II. He was stationed in Cairo Egypt with the 118th Engineer Band as well as the 43rd Engineer Band. He was a communicant of St. Elizabeth's Church where he served in various capacities. He was an Altar Boy from 1929 to 1937 and a Trustee on the Finance Council. He was an usher at Mass on Sundays since 1950. Mr. Lima was an active fifty year member of the Bristol Democratic Town Committee. He served as a State Representative from 1957 to 1963 and a State Senator from 1974 to 1983 where he was a Senate Majority Leader. He was proud to have assisted the residents of Bristol and especially the Portuguese community during his tenure in the state legislature. He was a member of the Portuguese Independent Band Club since 1933 and was Vice President of the band from 1971 to 1975. George marched in his first Fourth of July parade with the band in 1933 and missed only three parades in the past 80 years. George was a Life Member and past Captain of the Bristol Fire Department's Hydraulion Engine and Hose Company No.1 having joined in 1959. He held numerous other offices as a member of the "Hydes". He was the recipient of the first Fireman of the Year award from the Ladies Auxiliary for risking his life to save the old Engine 1 by driving the truck through the doors while the station was engulfed in flames. He served as the President of the Don Luiz Filipe Society in 1958 and was honored as its Man of the Year in 2008. He was also a former member of the Santo Cristo Club. His other memberships include the National and Rhode Island Funeral Directors Association, the Cup Defenders Association, a Past Grand Knight and 60 year member of the Bristol Knights of Columbus Council #379, Bristol County Elks Lodge #1860, American Legion Kearney Post #6, Anthony C. Almeida Post #237 VFW, Bristol Fraternal Order of Police and past President of Bristol Veterans Council. He also served on the East Shore Advisory Board for the former Industrial National Bank. George visited all 50 states and six of the nine Azorean Islands as well as Portugal and Madeira. He enjoyed golf, bowling and playing cards and, as a tribute to the families he served for 62 years, he continued to pay his respects at wakes and funerals until last September. His funeral services will be held Monday, April 13th, 10 AM from the George Lima Funeral Home 367 High Street with a Mass of Christian Burial, 11 AM at St. Elizabeth Church 577 Wood Street. Burial will follow in St. Mary's Cemetery, Bristol. Calling hours are Sunday 2 6 PM. I served with George in the Senate, and we became friends. It was noted that George traveled to all fifty states and that he loved to play golf. When George and Emily visited Hawaii, I traveled with them, and we had a great time playing golf. George was a great Senator and a wonderful man
