John Leyden Obituary

Leyden, John (Jack) J.,
US Marshall, RET., passed away in his North Kingstown home surrounded by his loving family on March 3,, 2021 at the age of 89. He joins his wife of 59 years, Beverly A. (Bowen) Leyden and is survived by his five children: Lori Leyden; John (Jack) Leyden Jr., RET Major RISP (wife Carlotta); Lynn McKnight (husband Brian McKnight); Lisa Murray (husband Dave Murray); Leigh Leyden (fiancé Doug Posich); and six grandchildren: Taylor and Lindsey McKnight; John J. Leyden III; and Shayla, Sara and David Murray, Jr.
Raised in the Smith Hill section of Providence, Jack was the son of Irish immigrants, the late Thomas J. and Katherine (McGovern) Leyden, as well as brother to Thomas J. Leyden, Katherine (Kay) Lovatt and Martin (Marty) Leyden.
From his humble beginnings, Jack enlisted in the United States Navy during the Korean War before entering a career in law enforcement that spanned 40 years. His exceptional and well-storied legacy was exemplified by his integrity, compassion and passion for justice.
A true humanitarian, he believed that everyone deserved a second chance, and readily offered love, comfort and advice to family, friends, and colleagues as well as a fair shake to all those he encountered in his work.
From walking a beat in South Providence as a rookie patrolman to his appointment by President William J. Clinton to United States Marshal for the District of Rhode Island, Marshall Leyden never forgot his roots and continually expressed deep gratitude for his many blessings.
On his appointment to US Marshall, RI Senator Jack Reed said, "Jack Leyden embodies integrity, courage, and the 'spirit of community,' and has a compassionate heart as well."
From 1956 to 1984, he served as a highly commended member of the Providence Police Department, quickly rising through the ranks until retiring with the position of Major. During that time, he led the PPD's first Organized Crime Task Force aimed at dismantling local racketeering.
He was also graduate of the 87th FBI National Academy.
In 1984, he was appointed Chief of the North Kingstown Police Department where he served the citizens for nine years before the late Senator Claiborne Pell nominated him to his position as US Marshall.
He spearheaded many high-profile investigations leading to major arrests including the 1975 murder conviction of Thomas Innis. The Innis case was appealed to the US Supreme Court resulting in the conviction being upheld and significantly defining the scope of 5th Amendment Miranda Rights.
Before his doctors "benched" him, Jack was an avid athlete who continued to play competitive basketball, racquetball, golf and tennis well into his 80s.
A devout Catholic, Jack was a communicant of Saint Bernard Church, belonged to numerous community organizations and supported many charities over the years. As a member of the Sons of Irish Kings, he was sincerely proud of his Irish heritage. He also served as President of the R I Police Chiefs Association and Secretary of the National Police Chiefs Association. He earned an Associate's degree in Criminal Justice from Roger Williams University.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Monday at 11:00 am at Saint Bernard Church, 275 Tower Hill Road, North Kingstown. Relatives and friends are invited. Visitation/walk-through will be held in the Church from 9:30 am to 10:30 am. Safety protocols will be in place.
In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to Hope Hospice and/or Meals on Wheels.
Burial, with military honors, will be private. For on-line condolences, please visit boyleandsonfuneralhome.com

I know your anniversary in heaven is coming up and I just wanted to tell you that I have not, and never will forget the kindness and compassion you had for me and my family when Peggy was murdered. Even months and years later you always was my protector. I love you Chief! You would tell me you weren't a chief any longer but I would say that you'll always be The Chief to me. I just realized that you now know Peggy! Give her a kiss for me!

Chief! The first week of being Chief of NKPD Peggy was murdered and you became my family. It was the most heartbreaking and continues to be, event in my life. I can't imagine what it would have been like without you! You were there for me like a dad, you sheltered me throughout the years after my life dismantled and cheered me on as they came together. Even when you were with The Marshals I called you My Chief and you would laugh. You were a pivotal part of my life are Jan 1984. I hadn't talked to you in several years and last night I dreamt of you...I found you again! You lived a life that any person would be so proud of, Jesus is! You are an unforgettable person who touched all her met.I cannot thank you enough for holding me up when all I wanted to do was fall down. I love you Chief John Leyden! Please give Peggy a kiss for me

What a legacy Jack left for not only friends and family, but for the law enforcement community as a whole who all consider him a brother, a boss, a friend, and a valued commander who always told the truth, and was a friend of common citizens as well, even those who ran afoul of the law at times. (I am sure that many of those will tell you that Jack turned their lives around) My own life would not be as it now is had it not been for Jack's path crossing it. He is greatly missed. I am proud to have known him.

Please accept my heartfelt condolences to the entire Leyden family. Our family tradition of law enforcement goes back for several generations and when it came time for me to make a decision, Jack agreed to speak with me on a Friday evening down at Bonnet Shores, where he provided keen advice. He was the very first person I spoke with, other than my retired grandfather, Joseph L. Burns, Jr. A gentleman and a professional and when we were fortunate to see him, it was an honor to render a salute to him. The people of the State of Rhode Island were most fortunate to have had him serve with such distinction for so many years. May he Rest In Peace.

To Jack's family, my sincere condolences and heartfelt sympathy on his passing. He was a true gentleman blessed with the best of an affable Irish personality and character. As a relative by marriage, we often got together for lunch in Naples or Twin Oaks and shared great conversations based on his extensive memory. As Beverly often stated, it would take Jack 30 minutes to leave Twin Oaks because he stopped to talk to so many people who knew him. He was a credit to his profession and made our nation, state and local communities much better places by his significant professional contributions. May the light of the Lord shine upon him and comfort all those who loved him. He fought the good fight and may he now rest in peace. Farewell my friend.

Jack, was a great guy, loved by everyone who knew him. My parents were friends for too many years to count. My Dad was once the US Marshall as was Jack!
May the road rise up to meet you, May the wind be always at your back. May the sunshine warm upon your face, the rains fall soft upon your fields, and until we meet again may God hold you in the hollow of his hand! RIP Jack, you truly will be missed!
