Mark Weiner Obituary

WEINER SR., MARK S. born May 13th, 1954, in Providence, RI died peacefully at home on July 26th, 2016, surrounded by the family who loved him and whom he loved. The son of Irving and Ruth Weiner, Mark was born 2 months prematurely and from the very beginning, was a fighter. He defied all odds after he was diagnosed with special needs at a time when that meant an impossible future. With the help of his mother and teachers at Henry Barnard and La Salle, he went on to graduate from Harvard University Extension, receive an honorary doctorate from Rhode Island College and achieve greatness. A lifelong Democrat, Mark began his career working on Jimmy Carter's 1976 Presidential Campaign. He spent the next four decades working to help hundreds of Democratic candidates get elected, from Presidents to Senators to Mayors, all of whom considered him a friend and confidant. His company, Financial Innovations Inc., is one of the largest political mass-marketing firms in the country, supporting Democratic candidates, political causes, unions and non-profits since 1980. Mark's key leadership positions included Treasurer of the Democratic Governors Association, Chairman of the Rhode Island Democratic Party and several roles with the Democratic National Committee. Mark touched the lives of every single person he met, with his daily goal being to try to do something nice for someone else each day. Whether it was replacing an entire playground for local disabled children in Warwick, his dedication to helping the homeless or his activity with various causes within the Clinton Foundation, he was a committed philanthropist and activist who left the world a better place than he found it. His greatest joy in life was bringing people together. He had an incredible knack for creating an environment in which two people with different beliefs or backgrounds could come together, learn from each other and walk away from the experience having gained from it. Mark was the loving father of Cathy, Steven, Zoë and Richard, father-in-law of Brian Bunnin and adoring grandfather to Maxwell and Bennett. He and his wife, Susan, shared a beautiful marriage for 26 years, and Mark would often say, "I love her even more today than the day we got married." He leaves behind his sister, Betsy, and his mother, Ruth, who both describe him as "the light of their life," as well as many friends whose lives he changed. With a radiant smile and infectious laugh, he was a loyal, trusted and exceptional friend to anyone who had the privilege to know him. Services will be held on Tuesday, August 2 at 12pm at Temple Beth El, 70 Orchard Ave, Providence, RI. Doors will open at 10:30, please plan to arrive early due to security. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to Mark's favorite charity the Clinton Foundation. Donations can be made online at https://bbis.clintonfoundation.org/Tribute. Shiva will be held at the Aurora Club on Tuesday evening at 6pm.

I had the privilege to meet Mark when I began volunteering at the Joseph Paolino Headquarters when he was running for Governor. Mark welcomed me to headquarters, was very friendly and taught me a lot about campaigning. I was fortunate to meet his beautiful wife Susan who became a very good friend. I still can't believe you are gone Mark. Rest in Peace.

Dear Weiner family,
My mother Henri Lopes and I would like to express our deepest sympathy for the loss of Mark. Although I never met Mark, I feel a connection to him because my parents bought their home from his parents in 1968. My mother continues to live in the house. I lived out of state for many years but when we spoke on the phone, my mother always told me about Mark's work for the Democratic party. When I moved back to Rhode Island several years ago,I had the chance to learn about Mark's activities via the local media. I have learned so much more about him since his passing. He had the most wonderful qualities as a loyal friend who was generous to all. He should have had so many more years. I hope that knowing all the good that he did and all the lives he touched is helping you even as you grieve.

I've only known of Mark for a couple of years and only met him last year when I had the pleasure of staying with he and Susan in their home during a weekend birthday celebration for Susan's Dad.

Mark was the ultimate host. He welcomed me with open arms and treated me like family, as if he had know me for years and not as the perfect stranger that I really was.

He was so full of energy and life, it was contagious! He made me feel special as he shared his love of music, sports, and great food. Sorry Susan, but when Mark and I slipped away at the baseball game he talked me into getting a couple of extra hot dogs for him, and I promised not to tell. We can laugh about it now, and I know he would be OK with me telling.

Being from the South, the respect with which Mark treated others was especially apparent to me. If Mark had ever wanted to move to TN he would have gotten an automatic membership to the Society of Southern Gentlemen.

And WOW, did he love his family. And not just Susan and the kids. He spread his love throughout all his family and extended family members, and their family, and even to this visitor, who after just a few days around him, genuinely felt like family.

Yes Mark touched many lives in his far too short life. My heart and prayers go out to Susan, Cathy, Steven, Zoe, & Richard. In your hearts and memories Mark will always be there.

Respectfully, George Campbell

Deeply saddened to hear of the loss an incredible man. I got to know Mark over the last 20 years simply as a customer of a coffee shop where I worked. He always knew exactly what he wanted how he wanted it and who he wanted to make it, and that was me! He Was not just any customer. He always took the time to ask about me and my son and he never miss an opportunity to pull out one of his famous $2 bills and say " make sure you give this to your son" ( we have a Jar full of Mark Winer $2 bills in our home). To Susie I want to say I am so sorry for your loss and thinking of you today!

Dear Susan,

We wish to add our condolences, thoughts, and prayers to the many already expressed. Mark was always generous and cordial to us during the few times we able to share his company. He was able to accomplish so much in his short lifetime but his greatest legacy will be his wonderful marriage to you, the beautiful family you shared, and the testament of friends. A successful and memorable life, indeed.

Hoping you will find solace in these memories in the days ahead...

The gifted Trappist Monk Thomas Merton wrote; "Every moment and every event of every person's life on earth plants something in that person's soul." Mark's soul is a beautiful and bountiful garden that reflects a whole lot of good that he did during his 62 years on earth." May that beautiful and noble soul, now rest in peace.

Susan, Zoe and Richard,
We were so sad to hear about Mark's passing.
Mark was not only our next door neighbor, he was a friend. Mark was a good man you could count on.
We will miss him.

Mark:

We got to know each other as next-door neighbors. A day fishing here and there were mixed in with laughs over the size of your political signs that always got strategically placed on your lawn. Ever the political strategist, you once told me: do you know how many eyeballs will see my signs driving down Blackstone Boulevard?

Also, I got to know you as a client while representing you as a member of the Providence Civic Center Authority. What I remember most: your advice and your loyalty.

We also both were Pritikin fans/attendees and we both, around the same time, battled back from our initial illnesses. Your death, therefore, again reminds me to appreciate every sunrise and sunset that I'm given.

And finally, every single time that we saw each other, I came away saying: now there's a good soul.

Godspeed...
