As I sat in a Finance Committee Meeting this week, I was wishing that John could be with us to hear the great news of a long awaited dream come true. The School has been able to purchase its high school building at 544 Elmwood Ave., and has successfully applied for 40% reimbursements from the state to support the phased renovations and improvements that it needs.

John would have been so pleased by the negotiations in our school's favor, and the agility and dedication with which the Committee has worked together. It was he who helped us sow the seeds for this milestone moment in our school's history. We remain grateful for his visionary guidance all along the way, and hope this message will provide comfort and joy to his family, as we remember his generous spirit with enduring love and appreciation.

There isn't an adequate way to express how deeply John affected Paul Cuffee School and its success stories. When we look back over our 20 year history, the themes of wise counsel, philanthropic generosity, optimism, community engagement, and social responsibility all come to mind. Our school would not be in existence without the Carter Family's investment in our school's mission, culture, programs and facilities. We miss John's intelligence, sense of humor, and passion for taking care of each other and the world we share. His example remains in our hearts and minds as we continue to transform teaching and learning amidst all of the facility changes and health-safety protocols required to optimize the educational landscape for everyone right now. We send our best wishes to John's beloved wife and family on this day and always.

Dear Members of the Carter Family,

John Carter was my favorite kindly and wise advisor. I miss his advice. When we last corresponded by email, shortly before his death, he told me he was embarking upon a new journey. I did not understand at the time. On the anniversary of his death, my husband Ralf and I are thinking of him and wishing that the journey of which he spoke has been good. He was a special person.

Dearest Letitia, I am deeply saddened by your loss. When Bill and I first met you and John in Harbor Island long ago, where we were the only guests, we became instant friends. How fortunate we were! Your love and generosity meant a great deal to us, and now that Bill has also left this earth, will never be forgotten by me.

To Letitia and Family:

Please accept our heartfelt condolences. We can only imagine how hard it is to lose your beloved husband, father and grandfather. May stories, photographs, and memories bring you comfort as you integrate this profound loss into your daily lives.

As you may know, John was an esteemed member of the Paul Cuffee School community for more than 15 years and enjoyed close relationships with our founding Board President Dave Burnham and Head of School David Bourns. Having toured the school building we now own when it was an abandoned maintenance garage in need of significant repairs and renovations, John could see our future - perhaps before we did. By serving on our Finance Committee, asking tough questions, and initiating a matching challenge grant, John helped our school grow and evolve from its humble beginnings in borrowed classroom spaces, to the high performing K-12 charter school it is today. He challenged and supported us from the outset because he believed in our mission, the youth we serve, our dedicated teachers, and our school leaders.

John Carter's involvement and investment in Paul Cuffee School has changed thousands of lives for the better and will continue to do so for generations to come. But Paul Cuffee School is not the only grateful beneficiary of John Carter's philanthropic leadership and generosity. John's encouragement of creative new ideas and the competitive grants to implement them, have benefited thousands of Rhode Islanders in countless ways.

An example to us all, John's thought-provoking questions, optimism and integrity will be sorely missed. We could not be more grateful to have known him and to count him among our school's most generous friends.

Sincerely,

Julia Karahalis

To Mrs. Carter, John and the entire family, my deepest condolences to all of you. Mr. Carter was an honorable man. I loved talking to him about earlier days at EFD during a brief stay at the Hulitar Center. May you find comfort in knowing how his legacy will live forever, especially in East Providence and the State of RI for all the good he has done.
