John Schliekelman Obituary

John M. Schliekelman

May 8, 1940-, December 29, 2018

WALCOTT, IA-John M. Schliekelman, 78, of Walcott, IA passed away Saturday, December 29, 2018 at his home.

John was born in Des Moines, IA on May 8, 1940 to Roman and Lucy (Talley) Schliekelman.

He graduated from Des Moines Dowling High School and received a bachelor's degree in civil engineering from the University of Iowa. John married Patricia Strombeck on September 29, 1964 in Iowa City, IA.

He was a hydraulic engineer for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, retiring in 1995. He later worked as a consultant with Ashton Engineering and various other engineering firms.

He was an active member of the Eckankar faith and led services at the ECK Center in Moline. John was keenly interested in geology and could speak eloquently on such topics as glaciers, fossils, or the compaction of clay soil. He learned to speak Latin as a child and with that foundation was adept at languages. He was an avid jogger and enjoyed traveling, his cats, and reading, especially history and science fiction. He was the proud grandfather of 5 grandchildren: Natalie, Clarisse, Luke, Evelyn and Niko.

Private services will be held. Contributions may be made to King's Harvest Pet Rescue in his memory.

John is survived by his wife Patricia of Walcott, daughters: Christine Galloway of Fort Worth, TX and Deborah (Matt Riddell) Schliekelman of Bettendorf, sons: Paul (Deborah Keys) Schliekelman of Athens, GA and Mark (Kerstin Held) Schliekelman of Seattle, WA and his sister Marianne Schliekelman of St. Louis, MO.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother Thomas.

I only knew John (and Pat) a little from their visits to see Chris in DFW years ago. But I feel I knew him well through her. And since she is a person of integrity, wisdom, and the truest of friends, I am sure John was the same. The planet will be the poorer for his absence.

Early in my career, I sat next to John for many years. I learned a lot from him, and he kept the office loose. His eating habits were legend back then :) I've always carried fond memories of working with John.

John was truly a fine gentleman. We had many memories with the Corps of Engineers while working there. He will be missed by many. I enjoyed visiting with him at his home in our retirement days. May the good Lord be with you in this time of need. Cheers

Patty, we are still trying to get this to sink in. We have had some especially good times in our later years with John, Dominic, S.K. and others. Good memories. He was a smart man and had a good sense of humor. You and your family are in our thoughts. Hugs from Dudley and Barbara.
