Dear Anna,
I was shocked and surprised when I called you today (Nov. 29) to wish Joe a happy birthday and found out the bad news. Although it's been many years since we last got together since I moved back to my home state of Illinois, it seems like yesterday when we were together along with Sterling and Bertha Lamm performing music for the public to enjoy.
Joe was a true friend and gentleman. He was genetically old enough to be my father and I could consider him to be an 'adopted uncle' during my years living in Pennsylvania. He was very talented and witty as well as creative. I recall one time when he was in a pinch and one of his musicians needed a German costume for the day's playing engagement, Joe was able to piece together enough items to custom make a costume for his sideman in which a person unfamiliar with German clothing had to really look hard to realize it wasn't the real thing but it was a good substitute. Joe always gave it his all in trying to please his audiences, yet he knew that it was impossible to please everyone.
Joe had faith and trust in God. May he rest in peace and it's my hope that the day will come when we will reunite and be happy with God forever.
